As the Buffalo Bills’ Damar Hamlin slowly recovers from collapsing from cardiac arrest on the field on Monday night, there have been signs of promise for his health. For one, the 24-year-old young man remains in critical condition but has started to show “remarkable progress” over the last day or so.
On Wednesday night, according to the doctors at UC Medical Center, Hamlin woke up in the hospital. One of the first things he apparently did was have a written exchange with the doctors treating him. When he asked who won the suspended Bills-Bengals matchup from Monday, the doctors had a clear and succinct answer for the real victor: Hamlin himself, in the game of life.
Doctors said after Damar Hamlin awakened last night, he asked in writing who won the game. Doctors told him: “Yes, you won. You’ve won the game of life.”

I mean, there’s almost nothing more to be said. Hamlin is fighting for his life, and one of his first thoughts upon awakening is about his teammates. Not that we needed any more reminders of the kind of special person Hamlin is. The doctors’ response in putting things into perspective for him says everything.
Here’s to hoping Hamlin’s health continues to improve dramatically in the coming days and weeks.
