Doc Rivers lays out his goals for Sixers backup guard Shake Milton

Doc Rivers lays out his goals for Philadelphia 76ers backup guard Shake Milton for the 2022-23 season.

CAMDEN, N.J. — The Philadelphia 76ers will use the early portion of the 2022-23 season to figure out what works best for their rotation. Coach Doc Rivers said the rotation will be fluid as he works through the roster.

The Sixers open the season on Tuesday against the Boston Celtics, and Rivers will have to figure out how the rotation pieces play out on the floor. That means he will have to figure out the role of Shake Milton.

The fifth-year veteran out of SMU figures to be the team’s backup ball-handler, but De’Anthony Melton also handles the ball. So the Sixers plan to use Milton in a variety of roles.

“I just want him to be Shake,” said Rivers. “Do it all. We use him as a utility player. Score, run the team. We want him to be a better defensive player, which he can be. He did a great job in camp of picking the ball up full court. That’s something he can do. We need him to do it.”

Milton averaged 8.2 points and 2.6 rebounds with 2.5 assists in 55 games in the 2021-22 season. He was held back by injuries, and he had to work his way through the adversity. Now that he is healthy, one figures he will be set to help this team succeed in this season.
