Dillon Gabriel named Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week after historic performance vs. WVU

After his epic performance in the Sooners 59-20 win over West Virginia, Dillon Gabriel was named Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week.

The Oklahoma Sooners got an epic performance from their quarterback on Saturday night in Norman.

Dillon Gabriel accounted for eight touchdowns (five passing and three rushing), setting an Oklahoma record for touchdowns in a game en route to beating West Virginia 59-20. He completed 64% of his passes for 423 yards and ran for 50 yards in an epic performance. Gabriel’s eight touchdowns were one more than the previous record held by Heisman winners [autotag]Baker Mayfield[/autotag] and [autotag]Kyler Murra[/autotag]y.

For his work against West Virginia, Gabriel was named the [autotag]Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week[/autotag]. It’s the sixth time Gabriel has earned Big 12 weekly honors and was named Offensive Player of the Week for his performances against Tulsa and Texas this season.

Gabriel moved to No. 10 all-time in passing yards at the NCAA level, passing Hawaii’s legendary quarterback Colt Brennan.

It was another outstanding performance in a season that’s been a career-defining one for Gabriel. He’s thrown for 3,069 yards and 25 touchdowns. He’s also run for 11 touchdowns this season. According to SoonerSports.com, Gabriel is one of two quarterbacks to complete at least 70% of his passes, throw for at least 25 touchdowns, have five or fewer interceptions, and rush for at least 300 yards and 11 touchdowns. The other? Former Sooners quarterback and Heisman finalist [autotag]Jalen Hurts[/autotag].

Dillon Gabriel has been fantastic in 2023 and has the Sooners in position to finish the season strong. He’ll have an opportunity to put up some more big numbers this week against a BYU defense that ranks 77th in pass defense and 116th in run defense.
