Dillon Gabriel among 247Sports top 10 quarterbacks through the first eight weeks of the season.
What a season it has been for [autotag]Dillon Gabriel[/autotag] and the Oklahoma Sooners. Before the year, there was chatter about replacing Gabriel with incoming five-star quarterback [autotag]Jackson Arnold[/autotag].
Gabriel has done nothing but silence all of that noise. He’s thrown for 2,131 yards, 19 touchdowns, and only three interceptions while completing 71.2% of his passes. He’s also added 230 yards and five touchdowns on the ground.
His biggest moment was the impressive drive with 1:17 left in the [autotag]Cotton Bowl[/autotag] with the Sooners down three. He led them on a five-play, 75-yard drive that ended in a touchdown to seal the win for the Sooners.
On Monday, 247Sports put out their rankings of the top 10 quarterbacks in college football through Week 9, and Gabriel came in at No. 7.
Gabriel didn’t move up in our rankings, but he and Oklahoma willed themselves to victory again in a close win over UCF. Gabriel is playing at an extremely efficient level and has a 90 overall offensive grade on the season, according to Pro Football Focus analytics. He’s passed for 19 touchdowns against only three interceptions this year. Gabriel should probably be getting some more Heisman praise with the season that he’s having. – Clint Brewster, 247Sports
I still think Gabriel is being overlooked nationally for the season he is having. Part of that is probably due to the narratives surrounding the Oklahoma Sooners quarterback. There’s no doubt with the season he’s having and, Gabriel should be in the top five. Especially when you consider the Sooners haven’t had much of a running game to speak of, and he has been a big part of Oklahoma getting to No. 6 in the nation.
But I’m sure being overlooked while he keeps working is exactly how Gabriel would want it. If the team achieves what it’s capable of, then the individual accolades will come for Dillon Gabriel in what will be his final season of college football.
