Did Phil Longo leave door open for ongoing QB competition?

UNC football offensive coordinator Phil Longo had an interesting comment on the team’s QB battle that was won by Drake Maye.

In just under 48 hours, the UNC football program will open up their season at home by hosting Florida A&M in Kenan Memorial Stadium. On Monday, the Tar Heels revealed that Drake Maye would get the nod at quarterback, starting the season for the program.

But is the battle between Maye and Jacolby Criswell officially over?

While Maye is the starter, the Tar Heels could potentially keep this battle open and make the switch if he does struggle this season. And offensive coordinator Phil Longo may have left the door open for Criswell to get out there as well.

Here is what Longo told Inside Carolina’s Ross Martin:

Now, take that quote how you take it but if Maye does struggle we certainly could see a change coming.

I don’t think Maye will struggle in Week 0 and if UNC is ahead by enough, Criswell likely gets in at some point. But the next three games are tough ones including two road games before hosting Notre Dame.  And Maye is going to have to play well for UNC to win those games.
