Devin McCourty underwent surgery, while still mulling NFL future

Devin McCourty reportedly underwent surgery after playing nearly 100 percent of the snaps in 2022.

New England Patriots captain Devin McCourty reportedly underwent a shoulder surgery, according to ESPN’s Mike Reiss.

McCourty, who played 97.3 percent of the snaps in the 2022 season, is still contemplating his NFL future. The three-time All-Pro safety will be turning 36 years old in August, and he’s already dabbling in other ventures, specifically broadcasting, for a career outside of football.

With that said, McCourty didn’t really show signs of having lost a step on the football field. He was still a solid defender on the backend of the Patriots defense, and his leadership abilities remain second to none.

Time will tell what kind of impact, if any, the recent surgery has on his decision.

McCourty finished the season with 71 tackles, eight pass deflections, one fumble recovery and four interceptions. Bill Belichick and company would probably love to have him back for another year.

But given his age and the toll the game has taken on his body, things are obviously much more complicated than simply wanting to play football.
