The Detroit Pistons and Miami Heat meet Wednesday in each team’s season opener. Tip-off from the Kaseya Center is set for 7:30 p.m. ET. Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Pistons vs. Heat odds and make our expert NBA picks and predictions.

Season series: First meeting; Heat won 2-1 last season

Detroit had a relatively quiet offseason as its biggest moves included trading for G/F Joe Harris from the Brooklyn Nets and trading for G Monte Morris from the Washington Wizards. Detroit also added F Ausar Thompson as the 5th overall pick in the 2023 draft.

Miami, to the displeasure of many Heat fans, also had an uneventful offseason after losing in the NBA Finals to the Denver Nuggets. Miami, after missing out on acquiring G Damian Lillard, decided to focus on acquiring depth during the offseason.

Miami signed F/C Thomas Bryant and G Josh Richardson to 2-year deals in the offseason. The Heat also lost 2 solid role-players from their 2023 Finals run in G Gabe Vincent (to the Los Angeles Lakers) and G/F Max Strus (to the Cleveland Cavaliers).

Pistons at Heat picks and predictions

Prediction

Heat 108, Pistons 102

Moneyline

PASS.

I am not convinced on Miami being such a heavy favorite, and Detroit is not worth betting on unless you’re absolutely certain of the Pistons winning as +333 underdogs.

Against the spread

BET PISTONS +8.5 (-105).

Detroit will be returning G Cade Cunningham, who missed the majority of last season after suffering a stress-fracture in his leg, and his return will bring life to this Detroit unit. I have questions about the guard play for Miami, especially on the defensive side of the ball, and I believe exploiting that weakness will be Detroit’s key to keeping this game close.

Over/Under

LEAN UNDER 219.5 (-110).

Miami has always been a team that prides itself on defense, and that will be no different this season. Miami ranked 2nd in opponent points per game last season, allowing 109.8, and this year should be more of the same. Both of these teams were around the middle of the pack in 3-point makes as a team last year, and that style of play will help this game hit the Under. 2 of last year’s 3 meetings between these squads hit on the Under.
