Former Alabama Heisman-winning running back Derrick Henry has recently been in contact with the Tennessee Titans’ front office regarding a long-term contract extension. After being franchise tagged in the Spring, the two parties have a week to get a deal done.
Henry will earn $10.3 million while being tagged in 2020, but will be able to enter free agency heading into the 2021 season, unless they are able to agree on a contract.
The Titans were the underdogs in the 2019 playoffs and made it all the way to the AFC Championship, only to be defeated by the eventual Super Bowl Champion, Kansas City Chiefs.
Henry is seen as the main reason why the team made it so far, though quarterback Ryan Tannehill was the first to receive a contract with some weight behind it, a four-year extension worth $118 million.
While Henry could hit free agency as the most sought out player in 2021, he has made it clear that he wants to stay with the team tat drafted him back in 2016.
Terry McCormick of TitansInsider.com describes the current state of Tennessee’s front office and what could happen within the next week.
“Although no extension is on the verge of happening, there is the possibility that talks could accelerate in the final week with the deadline approaching,” says McCormick. “A move toward common ground is still possible as the sides are expected to continue discussions in an effort to put together an amenable deal for the former Heisman Trophy-winning running back.”
Henry finished the 2019 season with 303 carries for 1,540 yards and 16 touchdowns, as well as 18 receptions for 206 yards and two touchdowns.
