Two weeks ago, Derek Zammit was offered by Rutgers football, following an unofficial visit to the team’s facilities. One of the top quarterbacks in the region, the class of 2026 standout saw his connection with the program deepen after his visit last week.
A 6-foot, 170-pound quarterback at DePaul (Wanybe, N.J.), Zammit now holds three Power Five offers from Duke, Wake Forest and Rutgers all involved in his recruitment.
In 2022 as a freshman for DePaul, Zammit was 80-of-122 for 1,194 passing yards with 11 touchdowns and four interceptions.
Zammit’s visit to Rutgers in July was a productive one, resulting in an offer for the standout quarterback. He spent some significant time with head coach Greg Schiano and offensive coordinator Kirk Ciarrocca.
“When I got to Rutgers (on) Friday, the coaches and the whole staff were very hospitable and made me feel at home,” Zammit told Rutgers Wire.
“And I’m glad I got the opportunity to do my thing in from of the coaching staff and coach Schiano. I was able to have a couple (of) conversations with coach Schiano and coach Ciarrocca about the program and the future.
“Overall, it was an amazing experience and I appreciate the time they have me and the trust they showed in me by offering me a scholarship. I want to keep building my relationship with coach Schiano and Rutugers in the future.”
This offseason, Rutgers hired the experienced Ciarrocca away from Minnesota to join their coaching staff. Ciarrocca turned Minnesota from a run-of-the-mill offense two years ago into a top-four unit in 2022.
Zammit said his time spent with coach Ciarrocca was “Great.”
“We talked a lot of football and he definitely has a wealth of knowledge that I hope he can continue to share with me,” Zammit said.
It is early for Zammit, who is getting ready for his junior season at DePaul. With three Power Five offers, he is taking his time in the process.
“Yes, it’s still really early so I haven’t heavily looked into any schools yet but anybody who shows interest in me I am also interested in,” Zammit said.
“So Rutgers is definitely a school I will continue to look at.”
