The New York Giants have announced that linebacker David Mayo will return to practice on Thursday, starting the 21-day window in which the team has to activate him.
Mayo suffered a torn meniscus during training camp and underwent surgery in late August, landing him on injured reserve.
After signing with the Giants last season, the 6-foot-2, 240-pound linebacker appeared in 16 games (13 starts), recording 82 tackles, seven stuffs, two passes defensed and two sacks.
If the Giants do not add Mayo, who is eligible to play in Week 5 against the Dallas Cowboys, back to their 53-man roster over the next 21 days, he will revert to season-ending injured reserve.
In Mayo’s absence, the Giants have started Devante Downs in three of their first four games, although he was replaced by rookie linebacker Tae Crowder in a 17-9 loss to the Los Angeles Rams last week.
