The Minnesota Vikings have been burned by a mega-trade for a star player in the past. The deal they made with the Dallas Cowboys to get Herschel Walker set back the franchise and helped the Cowboys win multiple Super Bowls. If the Vikings do trade up for Caleb Williams, they will have to give up a king’s ransom for the USC quarterback. It could seem like a Walker-style mistake. However, there are a few reasons why a Caleb trade would not be a Walker-ish mistake.
One is that Herschel Walker had several years of wear and tear on his body when the Vikings traded for him. They got nowhere near the level of impact they expected. Caleb Williams is not a running back. He could be a 20-year NFL star the way Tom Brady was and Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, and Joe Burrow are on their way to becoming.
Another main note is provided by Vikings Wire here:
“Whether you choose to believe it or not, the Vikings now have a good offensive line. They currently rank second per PFF in pass blocking grade and first in run blocking grade. The success of the offense, or lack thereof, isn’t due to the play of the line, but rather the surrounding pieces.”
Caleb Williams would be in a position to succeed.
A third note: Caleb could throw to Jordan Addison again. That worked out well at USC in 2022. The Vikings have Justin Jefferson and Addison and other quality pass-catchers.
The Vikings would have to give the Bears the crown jewels and Fort Knox and more … but it might be worth it.
