Daniel Jones says Giants must own humiliating loss

Several New York Giants players are already “moving onto Arizona” but QB Daniel Jones says the entire team must own Sunday’s ugly loss.

The New York Giants were shut out by the Dallas Cowboys, 40-0, on Sunday night in their most lopsided opening-week loss in franchise history. It was also the first time they were shut out by Dallas since 1996 — the Dave Brown era.

For a team that truly believed it had closed the talent gap in the NFC East, it was a humiliating and humbling showing. It’s also one they must own, says quarterback Daniel Jones.

“We’ve got to own it. Own what happened out there,” Jones told reporters after the game. “We didn’t play well enough. Didn’t execute well enough, didn’t give ourselves a chance to win the game and we got to own that, and then we got to attack the process this week of correcting it, of being critical and finding what we got to work on and making sure we are prepared and doesn’t happen again. Yeah, we’ve got to own it and move on.”

The Week 1 loss was a catastrophic failure from top to bottom. Everyone who stepped onto the field played worse than their opposing counterpart, and everything that could go wrong did go wrong.

That includes Jones himself.

“I think there is plenty of situations where I didn’t make a good decision, didn’t make an accurate throw, didn’t make the right read and I’m going to be very critical of myself and those situations and look to correct that going forward,” he said.

Veteran cornerback Adoree’ Jackson called the loss “embarrassing,” which was a sentiment felt throughout the locker room.

“It sucks,” running back Saquon Barkley said. “We got skunked in the National Football League against Dallas, and at home.”

Several Giants players repeated the company line of “we’re onto Arizona” but this one is going to linger for a while. All the optimism coming out of training camp has been washed away with the East Rutherford rain and all that remains is a sour taste and a lot of concern.
