Former Alabama running back Damien Harris was a key member of the Crimson Tide’s offense during his time under Nick Saban. After delaying his entrance to the NFL draft, some thought it would hurt his chances of landing a prominent role in an franchise’s backfield
Harris could have entered the NFL draft after his junior season, but decided to stay for his senior year due to his love for the program and the school.
That decision may have hurt Harris in terms of his draft value, in fact, his former back up Josh Jacobs was not only drafted before him, but was the first running back selected in the 2019 NFL draft.
The Kentucky native was drafted in the third round by the New England Patriots. He joined a backfield that consisted of Sony Michel, their lead back, and veteran Rex Burkhead.
In his rookie season, Harris only recorded four carries for 12 yards, far from what the former Alabama star is used to.
As he heads into his sophomore season with the Patriots, Harris looks to take on a bigger role and a larger workload within the offense.
Jeff Howe, New England Patriots beat writer for The Athletic, reported that Harris looks different during this season’s training camp and has been the “best back in camp.”
Damien Harris continues to stand out, and it's not just as a runner. He did a nice job picking up a block today and looks comfortable in his route tree. He's been the best back in camp.
