Courtland Sutton says Drew Lock didn’t play bad ‘at all’ in his only loss as a rookie

Drew Lock only lost one game in 2019 and Courtland Sutton says the quarterback didn’t play poorly in that defeat.

Broncos quarterback Drew Lock won all but one of the games he started last season — Denver lost to the Chiefs 23-3 in Week 15. Lock gave the Broncos opportunities to make that game closer than the final score implies.

“The only game he lost was to the Super Bowl winners in a snow game,” wide receiver Courtland Sutton said during a Zoom conference call on Thursday. “We missed some opportunities. I know that y’all have seen the play with Tyrann Mathieu. That play is something that did haunt me for a while. I moved on from it.”

Sutton is referencing a play in which Lock threw an accurate pass that would have been a touchdown if Mathieu, Kansas City’s safety, hadn’t knocked it out of Sutton’s hands.

Lock finished the game 18-of-40 passing with 208 yards with no touchdowns and one interception. Those certainly aren’t good numbers, but Lock wasn’t getting much help from his teammates.

“I also had another drop, a slant in that game,” Sutton said. “That bothers me thinking about it, but Drew didn’t play bad in that game at all. He was giving us chances to win. For him to go 4-1 as a rookie, it brings so much promise to this upcoming season.

“I know everyone in our building is excited to see his second year of what he’s going to do because, like I said, there’s so much promise.”

The Broncos have lost nine-straight games against the Chiefs. If Denver cleans up the mistakes Sutton mentioned, perhaps Lock will be able to help the Broncos break their losing streak against KC this season.
