Could WR Bryan Edwards be the Raiders most productive rookie in 2020?

It’s not hard to see why the Raiders took Henry Ruggs III over the likes of CeeDee Lamb and Jerry Jeudy. While the other two receivers are more complete players at this point in their careers, Ruggs has rare speed that is nearly impossible to find.

However, there is a chance that Ruggs is just a part-time player in 2020, only playing in certain packages and mostly being used as a decoy until he improves his route running. If that is the case, that could allow for third-round pick Bryan Edwards to see more snaps on the outside until Ruggs is ready.

In a recent piece by Brent Soboleski of Bleacher Report, he wrote about every team’s impact rookie for the 2020 season. For the Raiders, it was Edwards as his game is pro-ready due to his size, speed and strength. Here is a snippet of Soboleski’s thoughts on what Edwards could do as a rookie in Las Vegas:

(Bryan) Edwards’ size (6’3″ and 212 pounds) and physicality outside the numbers give him a chance to excel early, even coming off a foot injury. While Ruggs’ speed will change how opponents defend the Raiders, Edwards will likely do a lot of the necessary dirty work as a big part of the team’s passing attack.

Edwards is a polished receiver for a rookie after starting 47 games in the SEC. Not only is he experienced, but he was productive in college as well, catching 234 passes for 3,045 yards despite shaky quarterback play.

As long as he is healthy, Edwards should have no problem climbing up the Raiders’ depth chart as he is one of the few receivers on the roster with the ideal physical profile of an “X” receiver. He’s also a perfect fit in the West Coast offense as he possesses strong hands and a willingness to make tough catches in the middle of the field.

Look for Edwards to have a significant role as a rookie for the Raiders, potentially beating out Ruggs for snaps in 2020. Don’t be surprised if Edwards ends up being the team’s most productive rookie this season.
