The Houston Texans could play part of their regular season slate on a handful of Saturdays in 2020.
According to a report from the New York Post via the Touchdown Wire, the NFL is exploring the possibility of playing games on Saturdays if college football decides to postpone its season due to complications from the COVID-19 pandemic.
Though the NFL would like to keep the majority of its games played on Sundays, there is a possibility the league could take advantage of Saturdays and have tripleheader action, akin to what occurred in Week 16 when the Texans kicked off a three-game slate on NFL Network.
The NFL could go to more extremes if Saturday is freed up for its whole season. It could have a triple-header with games at 1 p.m., 4:30 and 8, or just have one Saturday game of the week.
… It is an interesting idea that won’t be resolved when the schedule is announced by May 9, but the NFL likely will give itself some flexibility.
If the NFL decides to play games on Saturday, because of an absence of college football, it would give the Texans the chance to pad their stellar Saturday regular season record. Houston is 3-1 on Saturdays with the lone loss coming in the 2005 season in a 38-20 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 16 at then-Reliant Stadium.
