One of the common themes about this 2020 NFL Draft class is the talent and depth at wide receiver. Earlier this offseason, NFL Network’s Daniel Jeremiah said that he had 27 receivers ranked inside the first three rounds.
Given the Raiders need at the position and all of their picks inside the top-100 of the draft, it wouldn’t be a shock to see them double-up at receiver in this year’s draft.
In a recent mock draft by Mike Renner of Pro Football Focus, he has the Raiders doing just that as they selected Oklahoma’s CeeDee Lamb at No. 12 and then Florida’s Van Jefferson at pick No. 91. Take a look at why Renner believes Jefferson would be a good fit in Las Vegas’ offense:
The Raiders aren’t done adding route-runners. Jefferson’s father is a receivers coach, and it shows with the way he sets up defensive backs. He was hampered by a rough quarterback situation but won 77% of his one-on-ones at the Combine
Jefferson is one of the better route runners and can play outside and in the slot. Adding him to a receiving corps of Lamb, Tyrell Williams, Hunter Renfrow and Zay Jones gives Jon Gruden several different types of receivers to rotate in their offense. It is noteworthy that Jefferson is currently battling a foot injury, so the team could ease him into the offense until he is fully healthy.
With the Raiders filling most of their significant needs on defense in free agency, Mike Mayock should be able to sit back and let value fall to him. The Raiders could be in a great spot to double-up on the position, especially on Day 2 of the draft.
Look for CeeDee Lamb or Jerry Jeudy to be the pick at No. 12 and then for them to possibly grab another receiver late on Day 2 as they have three third-round selections.
