Cornerback quickly becoming a top need for the Colts

The CB room must be addressed.

Even through the early part of the offseason, the top needs for the Indianapolis Colts remain relatively the same. However, the cornerback position is quickly becoming an area that needs to be addressed at some point this offseason.

Following the release of veteran Pierre Desir on Saturday, the Colts have a need for some depth in the cornerback room. Only Rock Ya-Sin and Kenny Moore have experience as starters while the rest of the room is either developing or hasn’t shown the ability to hold a significant role.

Desir was a starter in the room and a solid one, but contract details kept the Colts from wanting to keep him on the roster through the 2020 season. This now leaves the Colts needing to address the cornerback position in a bigger way than before the offseason started.

There are several ways the Colts could do that. They could look at the options in free agency. There aren’t a lot of available targets that will entice fans, but veterans Logan Ryan and Prince Amukamara would present an upgrade over Desir following his down season in 2019.

The most likely avenue the Colts explore, though, is through the draft. With seven picks between Rounds 2–6, Chris Ballard is most likely looking there for his next boundary cornerback. There is even the possibility he takes a cornerback at No. 34 overall for the second year in a row.

There are a few options for the Colts at that point. Maybe they look at Alabama’s Trevon Diggs, who they met with earlier this offseason. They could also look at Damon Arnette of Ohio State, though there have been some concerns about off-field issues.

They could wait until Day 3 to take an upside prospect like A.J. Green out of Oklahoma State or Michael Ojemudia out of Iowa.

What the Colts will do at the position is truly unknown as Ballard likes to keep it close to the vest, but the cornerback room is an area they will need to address as it becomes a bigger need this offseason.
