The Washington Commanders traded defensive end Chase Young to the San Francisco 49ers on Oct. 31 for a third-round compensatory pick in the 2024 NFL draft.
Most fans’ reaction was: How could the former No. 2 overall pick in the 2020 NFL draft only be worth a third-round compensatory selection?
It wasn’t just fans who were surprised Young only fetched a third-round pick. Some in the national media believed the 49ers stole Young.
Young would play in nine games for the 49ers, recording 2.5 sacks, 6.5 QB hits and 10 tackles. In 16 combined games with Washington and San Francisco, Young finished with 7.5 sacks, 15 QB hits and 25 tackles.
On Saturday, Young played in his second career playoff game — the first since his rookie season — against the Packers in the NFC Divisional Round. He recorded three tackles. Young would receive plenty of attention for his role in San Francisco’s run defense.
Needless to say, Washington fans are feeling much better about that trade after Young’s 10 games (and counting) in a 49ers’ uniform.
