Colts’ Shaquille Leonard in concussion protocol

The Maniac is in the concussion protocol.

Indianapolis Colts linebacker Shaquille Leonard is in the concussion protocol after suffering an injury during the joint training camp practices with the Chicago Bears.

While the starters didn’t play in the second preseason game Saturday night, Leonard wasn’t on the field at all during the second practice Thursday with the Bears.

Head coach Shane Steichen wasn’t available to comment after that practice, but he did provide an update following Saturday night’s preseason win.

“He’s in the protocol. He got dinged up in the practice, but he should be back soon,” Steichen told reporters.

Leonard has been a pleasant surprise for the Colts throughout training camp due to the workload he’s been seeing coming off back surgery this offseason. He participated in every practice up until the final one and participated in the preseason opener against the Buffalo Bills.

Concussions typically vary in terms of severity from player to player. Leonard could be back for the preseason finale against the Philadelphia Eagles or he may be held out until the regular-season opener.

We’ll see if Steichen has a further update on The Maniac when he meets with the media on a conference call Sunday, but we may not know his status until later in the week.
