Just before the 2020 NFL draft, the Indianapolis Colts added Trey Burton to the tight end room believing he will fill one of their more underrated needs on the roster.

The signing of the 28-year-old tight end kept the Colts from adding to the position during the draft and joining his former offensive coordinator in Frank Reich, the match seemed too good to pass up.
Reich sang the praises of Burton during a conference call with the media on Monday.
“I’m incredibly excited about Trey (Burton). Obviously, I was with Trey in Philadelphia,” Reich said Monday. “Trey is a big-time playmaking tight end. This guy is an incredible route runner, really smart and instinctive player. I think he fits a big need in our offense.”
Burton fits the mold of a move tight end and while he will certainly see time as a flexed-out piece in the formation, there is also a chance they use him as an H-back as well while.
Reich mentioned that Burton will fit in the role that Eric Ebron held for two seasons in 2018–2019, but that it will differ slightly for the former.
“You know that spot in our offense gets a lot of attention and I think he can step into that role that (Eric) Ebron was in,” Reich said. “He’ll play it different than Ebron would play it. It’ll look different, we’ll scheme different things up for Trey than we did for Ebron – some of them will be different. But that role gets highlighted schematically in certain ways and I expect Trey, assuming he’s going to stay heathy, will have a very productive year.”
The Colts love to use their tight ends. It’s a big part of Reich’s offensive scheme and while there are some mouths to feed in the offense, Burton should get plenty of looks if he’s healthy.
