Colorado women’s soccer upsets No. 14 Michigan State

Colorado’s first upset win of the fall sports season came courtesy of the women’s soccer team

Upsets are one of the most exciting aspects of college sports and the Buffaloes women’s soccer team delivered CU’s first upset of the fall sports season by beating No. 14 Michigan State at home on Sunday.

Playing at newly renovated Prentup Field, the Buffaloes got on the board in the first half as Lila Dere assisted Shyra James for a left-footed laser in the 36th minute. Ally Clark then put an exclamation point on the upset bid as she stole the ball from a Spartans defender and used some nifty footwork to score an unassisted goal in the 78th minute.

CU goalkeeper Jordan Nytes and the Buffaloes’ defense stymied the Spartans throughout the contest, even though Michigan State held the edge in shots (18-13) as well as shots on goal (5-4). The win gave Nytes her third shutout of the season and snapped Colorado’s streak of 11 straight losses to a ranked opponent.
