Former Alabama basketball star Collin Sexton had a conversation with Alex Kennedy from HoopsWire, part of the USA Today family, after his debut in the Rising Stars Challenge. Sexton finished with 21 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 three-pointers.
One of Kennedy’s questions really stuck out with Sexton:
Q: Who were some of the veterans who had the biggest impact on you and mentored you the most – whether it’s on or off the court.
CS: K-Love, Chris Paul and Coach Avery Johnson. Those guys, they’ve been where I want to get to. I just take bits and pieces of their game so that I can learn from them and understand the game even more. My relationship with Chris goes back to high school when I played on his teams (Team CP3). Ever since then, we’ve just been building that relationship. I talk to him every week and just pick his brain and figure out how he feels about certain plays and things that I can incorporate into my game. It’s cool.
Sexton also shared about some of his personal goals he has with improving in the NBA:
“I want to continue to become a better playmaker. Also, I want to continue to just lead – leading by example and leading my teammates in the right direction so that we can just continue to win more games.”
There’s no doubt Sexton will be a name we continue to talk about in the NBA. So far in his career, he’s averaging 19.8 points, 3.2 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 1.3 threes and 1.0 steal.
