College Football News Preview 2020: Top North Carolina Tar Heels Players
Best North Carolina Tar Heels Offensive Player
QB Sam Howell, Soph.
He was going to be the new quarterbacking star at Florida State, but Mack Brown and North Carolina swooped in and snatched him away. The 6-2, 225-pounder was great from the start, bombing away in wins over South Carolina and Miami.
He wasn’t always sharp, and he had his freshman ups-and-downs, but he threw two touchdowns or more in all 13 games and threw three scores or more in each of the last five games and in seven of the last eight. He’s got the moxie, the experience, and the receiving corps to do even more.

Best North Carolina Tar Heels Defensive Player
LB Chazz Surratt, Sr.
It’s been an interesting college career. Surratt was a superstar quarterback recruit for the program with the size, arm, and next-level skills to follow Mitch Trubisky and Marquise Williams in the succession. He got going as a freshman – running for five scores to go along with a decent season throwing the ball – but he only played in one game as a sophomore, and then came the transition.
He bulked up into a 230-pounder on his 6-3 frame, and he became one of the ACC’s best defensive players with 115 tackles and 6.5 sacks with 15 tackles for loss. He might not be the biggest hitter, but he’s great in the open field, he can move, and he thinks like a quarterback to be in the right position to make things happen.
