College Football: 16 starting quarterbacks are from the state of Texas this season

The state of Texas trails only California in this regard. Here are the 16 starting QB’s this season from the Lone Star state:

The state of Texas is a hot bed for high school football talent.

It’s one of the primary reasons head coaches at the University of Texas put such an emphasis on keeping the high level talent in-state. The problem with keeping blue-chip recruits in their own backyard is that other programs are obviously aware of the talent produced in the Lone Star state.

Alabama, Ohio State and numerous other powerhouse programs are known to raid the state of Texas in order to secure commitments from the nation’s top prospects.

To no surprise, Texas (16) and California (18) were atop the list in terms of where the game’s top arms come from.

Eight of the Lone Star State’s 16 starting quarterbacks began their career at one school before transferring into another. The group is led by King, who enters the season as an early favorite to win the Hesiman trophy. The last 10 starting quarterbacks at Lake Travis have earned Division 1 scholarships including Baker Mayfield. So, it isn’t surprising to see two Lake Travis alums getting the nod this weekend in Card and Brewer. Aune and Starkel didn’t graduate from the same high school, but played their senior seasons in the same town. Zappe is an interesting story as he wasn’t ranked in the class of 2017 and put up record numbers the past few years at Houston Baptist. – Andrew Ivins
