Clemson suffers big drop in new US LBM Coaches Poll

Clemson fell eight spots to No. 22 after its 34-3 loss to Georgia in the US LBM Coaches Poll, released Tuesday.

Clemson fell eight spots in the new US LBM Coaches Poll, released Tuesday — one of the biggest drops for any team ranked in the preseason poll.

The Tigers (0-1) fell from No. 14 to No. 22 after losing 34-3 to Georgia in the Aflac Kickoff Game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium last Saturday in Atlanta. The Bulldogs remained at No. 1 following a dominant Week 1 performance.

Ohio State stayed at No. 2 in the coaches poll while Oregon fell three spots from No. 3 to No. 6 after struggling at home against an FCS opponent (Idaho) on Saturday. Texas (No. 3), Alabama (No. 4) and Ole Miss (No. 5) all jumped ahead of Oregon in the coaches poll this week.

The Longhorns, Crimson Tide and Rebels all posted lopsided shutout victories in their openers while the Ducks defeated Idaho, 24-14. Oregon closed as a 49.5-point favorite against the Vandals.

Within the ACC, Miami became the league’s highest-ranked team at No. 15 following a dominant 41-17 victory over in-state rival Florida in Gainesville. NC State, ranked No. 23, fell one spot from their preseason ranking at No. 22.

Louisville was the only other ACC team ranked in the Coaches Poll Top 25, checking in at No. 24 after being unranked in the preseason poll. The Cardinals defeated Austin Peay, 62-0, Saturday.

Florida State, which lost to Boston College 28-13 on Monday to begin its season 0-2 after opening the year with a loss to Georgia Tech in Ireland, fell out of the Top 25.

Georgia Tech received the most votes for the Top 25, with 86. The Yellow Jackets defeated Georgia State over the weekend, 35-12.

Typically, the Coaches and AP polls are released every Sunday. This week’s release was delayed due to games being played Sunday and Monday.

Clemson hosts Appalachian State Saturday at 8 p.m. ET at Clemson Memorial Stadium. The game can be seen on ACC Network.
