The Kansas City Chiefs have lost another player to free agency.
According to Star-Telegram beat reporter Clarence Hill Jr, the Cowboys intend to sign former Chiefs tight end Blake Bell to a one-year deal. Bell was drafted out of the University of Oklahoma by the San Francisco 49ers in the fourth round of the 2015 NFL draft. The former dual-threat QB converted to tight end before he joined the NFL.
The native of Wichita, Kansas was brought to Kansas City ahead of the 2019 season to be a complement to star TE Travis Kelce. In his time with the Chiefs, Bell was primarily used as a blocker. During the course of the regular season, Bell only had eight receptions on 15 targets for 67 yards. He caught his first touchdown pass with the Chiefs during the come-from-behind win over the Houston Texans in the divisional round of the playoffs.

Bell has a family history with the Chiefs, so I’m sure his departure is bittersweet. His uncle, Mike Bell, was a defensive end that played 13 seasons and started 100 games for the Chiefs. Bell had a chance to do what his uncle was unable to accomplish when he played in the NFL, which was to end the Super Bowl drought in Kansas City.
While Herbie Teope of the Kansas City Star reports the team expressed interest in bringing Bell back, It’s not exactly a shock that Bell won’t return to Kansas City. The team could start the season tomorrow with a tight end room that features Kelce, Deon Yelder, Nick Keizer and John Lovett. That group should suffice, so long as Kelce stays healthy.
