Chiefs stars share words of encouragement for 2020 NFL Draft prospects

Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes, Tyrann Mathieu and others have shared encouraging words for incoming NFL Draft prospects.

Several players from the Kansas City Chiefs are encouraging the incoming 2020 NFL Draft class ahead of the draft. They’ve shared their unique experiences as it relates to the NFL Draft and the Chiefs’ social media team posted many of those messages to Twitter. Each player took an entirely different path to get to Kansas City, but those paths ultimately helped them become Super Bowl champions.

Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes had some powerful advice about getting drafted and how to approach things afterward.

“First off, enjoy the moment,” Mahomes said. “Enjoy the moment of being drafted and reaching your dream and getting to the NFL. Because it is truly a special one that you’ll never forget. The moment after you get drafted, you’re in the fight now. You’re in the fight to make an organization better.”

Tyrann Mathieu’s experience was a bit different, he was left waiting to hear his name called, but he didn’t let it get him down.

“I would tell anybody that has the opportunity to play in the NFL to really be grateful and thankful,” Mathieu said. “And really just understand your responsibility and stay true to yourself. Always hold yourself accountable and understand that this is just one small step in a long journey.”

Instead of wallowing over where he was drafted, Mathieu let it give him a chip on his shoulder. He remained true to himself throughout his career and has always been out to prove the doubters wrong.

For Chiefs TE Travis Kelce, he recalled a veteran player that he was able to lean on early in his career with the team.

“This culture that we’ve been able to create here has a lot of people playing for each other,” Kelce said. “For me, it was a guy like [former Chiefs tight end] Anthony Fasano. That’s what I am trying to be for the young guys myself, just someone they can rely on if they have any questions.”

Kelce also had some advice for when the COVID-19 pandemic lists and players are finally able to step into a team facility for the first time.

“You get into a facility and it’s new,” Kelce said. “Everything seems like it’s Chinese, but just go with the flow.”

The Chiefs even had a player with a strong message for those prospects who won’t hear their name called in the 2020 NFL Draft.

Winchester might not be a star player, but there’s no denying that his hard work landed him a roster spot with the Chiefs and helped make him a world champion. That can never be taken away from him and it’s a good lesson to learn as prospects enter the league.
