Chiefs sign rookie minicamp tryout OL Vitaliy Gurman

The #Chiefs have signed an offensive tackle who was one of 40 tryout players at their rookie minicamp.

The Kansas City Chiefs have added another tryout player from rookie minicamp to the 90-man offseason roster.

According to the NFL’s personnel notice for Tuesday, the Chiefs have signed Toledo OT Vitaliy Gurman. The 23-year-old product of Rochester, New York was among the 40 players who tried out with Kansas City during their rookie minicamp over the first weekend of May.

Listed at 6-4 and 310 pounds, Gurman transferred to Toledo from Edinboro University in 2020. He appeared in 32 games with the Fighting Scots, mostly as their starting center. In 2019, Gurman earned first-team All-PSAC honors, as well as recognition as the team’s MVP on the offensive line.

Upon arriving in Toledo, Gurman secured a starting job with the Rockets, this time playing the left tackle position. He helped the Toledo passing attack rank No. 1 in the MAC in passing offense in 2020. In 2021, Gurman shifted to the left guard position, starting 7 games at that spot. He’d start the final five games at left tackle. His performance helped pave the way for Toledo to be ranked as the No. 1 scoring offense in the MAC. He also earned third-team All-MAC honors.

The versatility and success at a number of different positions across the offensive line is something clearly intriguing to Kansas City about Gurman’s game here. If he can continue to boast the same type of positional versatility in the NFL, he could carve out a nice backup role with the team. Gurman becomes the second rookie minicamp tryout to sign with the Chiefs, also the second on the offensive line, joining former Virginia Cavaliers OL Chris Glaser.
