Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes’ foundation, 15 and the Mahomies, will be a presenting sponsor for the Black College Football Hall of Fame’s upcoming “Road to Equality” event. “Road to Equality” will raise funds and awareness for Historically Black College & University (HBCU) football programs and the Black College Football Hall of Fame, which was founded by former NFL QBs Doug Williams and James Harris in 2009.
The event is set to take place on at 8:30 p.m. EST on July 15. It will be hosted by NFL Network’s Steve Wyche and CBS analyst Charles Davis, featuring stories about the adversity and triumphs of some of the best college football players to come from HBCUs. They’ll discuss stories from players like Aeneas Williams, Deacon Jones, John Stallworth, Lem Barney, Jerry Rice, Mel Blount, Larry Little, Art Shell, Michael Strahan, Bob Hayes, Walter Payton, even former Chiefs such as CB Emmitt Thomas and LB Willie Lanier.
Former NY Times columnist Samuel Freedman will join the event to talk about his best-selling book titled, “Breaking the Line: The Season in Black College Football That Transformed the Sport and Changed the Course of Civil Rights.” The book was released in 2013 and covers how the 1967 rivalry between Grambling College and Florida A&M helped break racial barriers, forever revolutionizing college football and the NFL.
“Our goal for this meaningful event is to engage in the national discussion on social justice by sharing the history of black college football and its impact on civil rights,” the website reads.
