Charli Collier Leads Texas To Victory Over Number One Ranked Stanford

Texas Longhorns women’s basketball team takes down the number one ranked team in the country.

Early on against the number one ranked Stanford Cardinals, the Texas women’s basketball team got out to a quick start leading 22-16 early on in the second quarter. The Stanford women’s team wouldn’t make it easy for Texas but once Cardinals pulled within three in the first half, the Longhorns would play some suffocating defense and their offense would build the lead back up.

Late in the second quarter, Stanford shot just 1-13 while the Longhorns built their lead to double digits. That was the largest deficit that Stanford has played against all season. Texas took an nine-point lead into the half 35-26.

In the third quarter it was all about the Cardinals as they outscored Texas by 10 to take their first lead of the game into the fourth quarter 47-46 thanks to a 10-2 run as they closed out the quarter. Lexie Hull was a perfect eight for eight from the free throw line which helped them get back into the game.

In the fourth Texas would go back up 50-47 to begin the quarter with back-to-back steals leading to the women’s team getting quick scores. Charli Collier was the big star for Texas, she recorded a double double with 20 points and 19 rebounds.

With less than a minute in the game, Texas would get up 65-62 as they tried to close out the game. A missed layup gave Stanford an opportunity. Texas gave up an inside score with 5.7 seconds left in the game. Alecia Sutton would nail two free throws to give Texas a three-point lead with just 4.8 seconds left. A steal by Joyner Holmes led to an easy layup to secure the win with a 69-64 victory. She would finish with 13 points and eight rebounds.

Texas gets their first win over a number one team since 2004 when they defeated the number one ranked Tennessee Lady Vols. Texas improved to 7-4 on the year after handing Stanford their first loss of the season.
