Arizona Cardinals fans can count on big pass-rushing production from outside linebacker Chandler Jones. However, at least from the defensive interior, there hasn’t been much production, in terms of sacks.
Jones believes that could change this year after the addition of free agent defensive tackle Jordan Phillips, whom the Cardinals signed to a three-year, $30 million contract this offseason.
“Jordan Phillips is a guy who has really caught my eye,” Jones said in a press conference last week. “I feel like he’s going to be a force to be reckoned with, honestly.”
Last year with the Buffalo Bills, Phillips had a career year, picking up 9.5 sacks, 16 quarterback hits and 13 tackles for loss. They were all career-highs and it was an NFL record for sacks from a player his size.
“He’s big, he’s strong,” Jones added. “Even just watching his highlights and some of his game film, he just blows right by guys.”
It seems unreasonable that Phillips could do more, but Jones isn’t ruling it out.
“I feel like he’s one of those guys that even has more to tap into that he hasn’t tapped into yet,” he said. “I’m excited for him.”
Whether or not Phillips can get more sacks than last year, his presence will certainly help Jones in his pursuit of the league’s single-season sack record.
