What will the New York Giants do in the first round of this month’s NFL draft?
Some experts have them moving up from No. 25 to grab either a top wide receiver or cornerback. Others believe general manager Joe Schoen will either stand pat or even trade back as the talent pool flattens out.
Chad Reuter of NFL Network is of the school that Schoen will trade back. In a recent article, Reuter sees the Giants swapping the No. 25 pick with the Kansas City Chiefs for Nos. 31 and No. 95 overall.
The thinking is that the Chiefs want a dynamic wideout and if Tennessee’s Jalin Hyatt or Boston College’s Zay Flowers is on the board, they can do business with the Giants again for a wide receiver.
In October, the two teams agreed on a trade that sent former first-round pick Kadarius Toney to the Chiefs in exchange for pick No. 100 in Round 3 and No. 209 in Round 6. The Giants later traded the third-rounder to the Las Vegas Raiders for tight end Darren Waller.
The proposed trade makes sense for the Giants as they still maintain a first-round pick and regain a third-rounder.
They could still snag a top wideout or cornerback and may even use the pick to take a center, a position they are wafer-thin at.
“The Giants moved down twice in the second round last year, accumulating fourth- and fifth-round selections to build roster depth,” writes Reuter. “GM Joe Schoen must have learned during his time as an assistant to (Brandon) Beane in Buffalo about the value of dropping a few spots in exchange for a top-100 selection, especially when the team can still find a center or corner prospect waiting to become the final pick of the first round.”
All true. Now let’s see if comes to fruition.
