CFB analyst says Texas could play two quarterbacks against BYU

Maalik Murphy and Arch Manning could both get their shot on Saturday.

The Texas Longhorns could play both Maalik Murphy and Arch Manning at quarterback on Saturday. That is, if one Texas football analyst is correct.

Longtime analyst and recruiting expert Gerry Hamilton had the following to say about how Texas could approach the game against the BYU Cougars. He said the following on the On Texas Football Longhorn Livestream.

“I’m going with what (Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian) said Monday. You know, if the game were today, and he said, Monday, that Maalik’s the starter. I expect Maalik to be the starting quarterback pending, you know, something unexpected happening. Guys, I’ll be surprised if both guys don’t play Saturday, though.”

It’s an interesting expectation to have both Murphy and Manning getting snaps on Saturday, but one that is within the realm of possibility. Hamilton continued to share his confidence in both quarterbacks receiving playing time.

“I know everybody’s asking questions about Arch’s redshirt and all that. … I don’t think Arch is going to be in Austin five years. … Now you’re in a different situation. You’re 6-1, ranked (No. 7) in the country. The objective is to win games. And the way you give yourself the best chance to win games right now is, both those guys have to be prepared to play.”

Texas will need to do what is in the team’s best interest. Saturday will reveal what Steve Sarkisian believes in best for the program against BYU and moving forward this year.
