Celtics injury update: Marcus Smart, Robert Williams III probable vs. Jazz; Aaron Nesmith to Maine

Boston will likely be healthier against Utah on Wednesday.

The Boston Celtics announced that both veteran guard Marcus Smart and starting big man Robert Williams III will be probable to play against the Utah Jazz at TD Garden on Wednesday night after they had missed the team’s last tilt on the road against the Oklahoma City Thunder Monday night with a non-COVID illness and knee tendinitis respectively.

The team is also sending second-year small forward Aaron Nesmith to Portland to play with the Maine Red Claws to get the Vanderbilt product some playing time as he is worked back into the team’s rotation, the Celtics’ relatively close game against the Thunder proving a subpar opportunity for Nesmith to get back on the court after an extended absence due to a sprained ankle sustained earlier in the month.

Boston seems to be taking care to give key players rest and not rush their roster back from injury as the 2022 NBA postseason draws closer — yet another sign the team anticipates a deep run with all the care such a footing requires.
