CBS Sports labels Auburn a ‘loser’ after disheartening week on the hardwood

Auburn missed two chances to secure its first quad 1 win last week, and hopes to return to the win column on Wednesday.

No. 6 Auburn basketball entered last week’s action as winners of 11 straight games and hoped to ride that momentum into two quad 1 wins.

The Tigers instead ran into a buzzsaw, dropping two consecutive road games to Alabama and Mississippi State. Their hopes of earning a resume-boosting win are now on hold until Saturday when the Tigers visit Ole Miss.

After evaluating last week’s action, Kyle Boone of CBS Sports separated many teams into two columns: winners and losers. As you can imagine, Auburn’s disappointing week landed them in the losers bracket. Boone points out that the Tigers are the lone top-25 team without a quad 1 victory.

Bruce Pearl and his paper Tigers failed — once again — to secure a Quad 1 win on Saturday, falling 64-58 at Mississippi State. They are, and remain, the only top-25 team in the NET rankings to still not have a Quad 1 win on the resume.

No. 8 Auburn is 16-4 overall, 5-2 in SEC play and viewed highly in the metrics at both KenPom (No. 7) and BartTorvik (No. 3), but it has a lackluster resume at the top — hardly the type of problem you’d expect for a team that up until this week has looked like the class of the SEC.

Auburn returns to Neville Arena on Wednesday to face Vanderbilt, a team they have already handled once this season. The Tigers will wrap up the week by visiting Ole Miss on Saturday, which, if successful, will be their first quad 1 win of the year.
