YouTube AdBlitz Feature: Toyota’s ‘The Joneses’

Tommy Lee Jones, Rashida Jones, Leslie Jones, and Nick Jonas create a compelling Super Bowl 56 spot for the car brand.

Toyota continued its busy Super Bowl Sunday, releasing a second national spot during the game titled “The Joneses.”

In partnership with AdBlitz, a YouTube exclusive, we’re hitting rewind and taking a closer look.

The star-studded joyride adds a new spin to the classic idiom—”keeping up the Joneses”—as the great expanse becomes the playground for the all-new Tundra and drivers Tommy Lee Jones, Rashida Jones and Leslie Jones.

Cuts. Turns. A mud-slinging game of oneupmanship throttles ahead as the three make their way up Jones Pass, Colorado—while, of course, Tom Jones’ “It’s Not Unusual” sets the mood.

It’s a cinematic switch from Toyota’s first Super Bowl commercial that featured the McKeever brothers. While that ad touched on more heartwarming and inspirational tones, Act 2 keeps up a comically competitive overflow right up until the end… when a fourth Tundra joins the pack, driven by Nick Jonas.

The big names and visuals create the type of eye-catching impact that brands hope to capture during the big game; it’s a goal that Lisa Materazzo, group vice president, Toyota Marketing, Toyota Motor North America, set out to achieve.

“The all-new 2022 Toyota Tundra has been years in the making and you only get one chance to make a first impression,” said Materazzo in a statement provided by YouTube AdBlitz. “It’s only fitting that we launch the all-new Tundra, our biggest U.S. campaign launch ever, alongside this caliber of star power on the world’s largest advertising stage.”

2021 YouTube AdBlitz awards: The top 5 most-viewed Big Game ads

A final look at the top five most-viewed Big Game ads for 2021 according to YouTube’s AdBlitz

In a year with so many questions surrounding the Big Game—including if there was even going to be one—the creative efforts behind the commercials were impressive and certainly worthy of a standing ovation.

Whether the ad appeared before, during or after the game, the audience was entertained with a flux of first-time advertisers, A-List celebs, levity, spot-on comedy, and powerful stories. All of it combined to create a memorable Super Bowl Commercial Season.

And the most prominent spots on the biggest stage didn’t stop gaining attention after Super Bowl 55 had ended, either. Many of the commercials currently have view counts that soared this past week, with many topping the 10 million mark.

As we wrap up our commercial rewatch party with AdBlitz, a YouTube exclusive, let’s take a final look at the five most-viewed Big Game ads for 2021.

5. Old Spice: “Winner”

https://youtu.be/czp_11uyVP0

Old Spice hit it big (without spending “in-game big”) in this commercial that ran leading up to Super Bowl 55. Always a contender for creating fun concepts, the funny transformation during the 60-second spot has been a hit, reaching the rare view-count company in AdBlitz’s top five.

4. T-Mobile: “Rockstar 5G”

https://youtu.be/HxllNfjYw2U

The communication breakdown between Adam Lavine and Gwen Stefani in this hilarious T-Mobile spot comes in at No. 4 on the list. The ad successfully delivered on the punchline with Blake Shelton’s help, and the humorous twist has continued to shine with a steadily rising view count on AdBlitz.

3. Honey: “@MrBeast’s Mom Challenge”

https://youtu.be/FT5KAoUOEKE

Another commercial that skipped the national, in-game buy but still managed to make a digital impact, this spot from online browser add-on Honey skyrocketed to No. 3 in AdBlitz’s final view-count rankings. The 45-seconds of fast-talking (thanks to YouTube personality, MrBeast) has kept up with some of the larger brands in the advertiser lineup in 2021, which is an impressive achievement.

2. T-Mobile: “The GOAT in 5G”

https://youtu.be/5L6juLUkwuw

T-Mobile’s greatest achievement this year was the “one that didn’t make it into Super Bowl 55.” Although Verizon’s partnership with the NFL doesn’t really make this as controversial as some might perceive, give credit to T-Mobile for taking the (probably well-understood) snub and making it work in their favor.

1. Amazon: “Alexa’s Body”

https://youtu.be/xxNxqveseyI

Michael B. Jordan and a supporting cast of solid characters took Amazon’s latest Super Bowl spot to feature Alexa and hit view-count gold. The current total is more than spots No. 3 and No. 2 combined, and it’s still rising.

Super Bowl commercial REWATCH with YouTube’s AdBlitz: Most viewed trailers

The Super Bowl has always been an ideal time for studios to release the highly anticipated trailers to blockbuster films.

The Super Bowl has always been an ideal time for studios to release the highly anticipated trailers to blockbuster films. The fade-out accompanied by “Coming Soon” creates a massive buzz among fans and sets up the theatrical schedule sometimes a year in advance, leaving the audience…wanting more.

We saw it in 2020 with big franchise spots like the latest James Bond 007 flick “No Time to Die” and the next Fast and the Furious (“F9”).

And even though the pandemic did a number on the film industry and theater attendance in 2021 that didn’t stymie the popular Big Game commercial genre during this year’s Super Bowl.

Whether it was an on-demand release or an actual theatrical tease, several of the spots appeared throughout Super Bowl 55, with a few continuing to gain momentum well after the game, according to AdBlitz, a YouTube exclusive.

Universal Studios: “Old”

https://youtu.be/eB1m-WogYeg

M. Night Shyamalan’s latest sleight of mind takes a trip to the beach, where things immediately aren’t what they seem. The 30-second teaser was more than enough time to unveil multiple eye-opening twists, and as expected, the spot has already received extra attention on AdBlitz.

Disney Plus: “The Falcon and The Winter Soldier”

https://youtu.be/IWBsDaFWyTE

Disney Plus dropped in from the Marvel Cinematic Universe to present the streaming series “The Falcon and the Winter Solider.” Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Emily VanCamp, and Daniel Bruhl flip, fly, and eye stare during the trailer, which gained a ton of recognition on social media. Disney’s 30-second Super Bowl cut didn’t quite do the trick for Ad Meter panelists, though, finishing 30th (of 57) in the ratings.

However, this extended cut has certainly received more than a second glance from interested fans.

Amazon Prime Video: “Coming 2 America”

No amount of Marvel superheroes can overthrow America’s favorite Zamunda icon. Simple as that. The “Coming 2 America” trailer has gained a solid midweek lead and continues to rush in the views heading toward the weekend.

Super Bowl commercial REWATCH with YouTube’s AdBlitz: Most viewed comedy ads

When it comes to the Big Game commercials, comedy is king.

When it comes to the Big Game commercials, comedy is king.

True, there have been exceptions throughout history. But much of the Super Bowl commercials’ stake in pop-culture memory is a humorous one that fans still remember (and rewatch) today—from frogs to Weiner dogs to a set of satin sheets and an overzealous boyfriend. And, of course, Betty White and a game of football.

They made us laugh…

And then, laugh again…

And again.

This year’s Super Bowl commercial lineup didn’t stray from the punchline, either, with the top-four USA TODAY Ad Meter spots hitting the collective funny bones of fans and panelists.

Like the comedic commercials of yesteryear, the 2021 spots are also getting a substantial rewatch.

Moving along in our Super Bowl commercial rewatch, let’s head back to  AdBlitz, a YouTube exclusive, and see which comedic ads are picking up the most views

T-Mobile: “Family Drama 5G”

https://youtu.be/VtW3OhQpyh0

It’s a gridiron battle between Team Anthony vs. Team Mama—who has a secret weapon in Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce—in this spot from T-Mobile.

Doritos: “Flat Matthew”

T-Mobile: “Rockstar 5G”

https://youtu.be/HxllNfjYw2U

Gwen Stefani, Adam Levine and Blake Shelton starred in T-Mobile’s first Super Bowl spot to air during the game. The brand doubled up with comedic ads in 2021, and each landed successfully as both earned a top-20 USA TODAY Ad Meter nod.

Uber Eats: “Wayne’s World & Cardi B’s Shameless Manipulation”

Super Bowl commercial REWATCH with YouTube’s AdBlitz: Most viewed inspirational ads

From newborns to Bruce Springsteen, several brands went inspirational during Super Bowl 55

Although it might have seemed like a Super Bowl commercial year primed for just focusing on the comedic, that wasn’t the case. More than a handful of the inspirational storylines were in the 2021 Big Game, with several capturing just enough serious tones without going overboard.

And ultimately, it seems as though a few of the ads resonated with fans.

Moving along in our Super Bowl commercial rewatch, let’s head over the AdBlitz, a YouTube exclusive, and see which inspiring ads are picking up the most views

Michelob ULTRA: Happy

https://youtu.be/6nzZW8BN-WY

Michelob ULTRA used a powerful montage of athletes—from Serena Williams to Peyton Manning, Anthony Davis to Alex Morgan and even Billie Jean King, Willie Mays and Arnie Palmer—to show that “it’s only worth it if you enjoy it.”

Super Bowl commercial REWATCH with YouTube’s AdBlitz: Extended cuts

Sometimes, what you don’t see during the Super Bowl commercial spots can create just as much—if not more—intrigue in the days following the rundown.

Sometimes, what you don’t see during the Super Bowl commercial spots can create just as much—if not more—intrigue in the days following the rundown.

Brands have come to realize this “show me more” collective mindset too, and have acted accordingly using extended cuts of the commercials.

Of course, an extended cut is nothing groundbreaking in entertainment. But it does signal that some brands have adapted to the Super Bowl commercial world’s monetarily rugged conditions.

And when considering that 30 seconds of space can cost upwards of $6 million, it makes sense to add a little stretch to the dollar by producing more in-depth versions of the Big Game ad that fans can watch online.

Plus, it’s been a hit.

As we head into our post-Super Bowl coverage of the 2021 commercials—including the USA TODAY Ad Meter Replay Ratings—we’ll be rewatching a lot of spots, weighing in again along with all the fans.

To help, we’re checking back in with AdBlitz, a YouTube exclusive, to see which extended cuts are gaining the most attention.

Here’s what we found…

Paramount Plus: “Sweet Victory”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iG0jvqAfiKA&list=PLjncHZSg0GNHexPqzhlkGhsjZ05XYpn_g&index=13

Paramount Plus dropped four spots on Sunday, with the last culminating in a star-studded reveal atop Paramount Mountain. That was only 60 seconds, though. This 1:30 cut has even more twists and turns…Way. More.

REWATCH the entire AdBlitz playlist here

Disney Plus: The Falcon and The Winter Soldier

https://youtu.be/IWBsDaFWyTE

Trailers also present a tricky navigation during the Super Bowl because of the timecrunch. For instance, the second cut of this Disney Plus release ranked 30th (out of 57) in the USA TODAY AD Meter ratings.

But the extended cut is racking up views on YouTube’s AdBlitz.

It will be interesting to see how the spot does in the Replay Ratings…

Fiverr: “Opportunity Knocks”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XelsNvpibpQ&list=PLjncHZSg0GNHexPqzhlkGhsjZ05XYpn_g&index=19

Fiverr jumped into the Super Bowl commercial ring as a first-time contender with its spot that featured the now pop-cultural famous Four Seasons Total Landscaping. The 30-second commercial that aired during the game didn’t land with Ad Meter panelists and finished 43rd.

But this extended cut has a few more unexpected pop-ups here and there and has gained the attention of quite an impressive number of people.

General Motors: “No Way Norway”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yCy-a_E2I3s&list=PLjncHZSg0GNHexPqzhlkGhsjZ05XYpn_g&index=31

Five seconds of Will Farrell can send the digital world into a sharing frenzy, escalating view counts into rare territory. So it’s not a surprise that this extended version of GM’s ad is doing so well.

The original finished sixth in the USA TODAY Meter ratings.

NFL: “As One”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SilS_vq4XOw&list=PLjncHZSg0GNHexPqzhlkGhsjZ05XYpn_g&index=33

The NFL has typically performed well in the USA TODAY AD Meter ratings, even winning it all in 2019. However, like the 2021 game, this year’s spot didn’t turn out to be an all-time great. Whether it was the airtime (heading into the fourth when Chiefs and causal fans might have changed the channel), or the Vince Lombardi footage and visual effects fell flat, the ad just made the top 20 (19th) in the USA TODAY Ad Meter ratings.

This cut that runs an extra 40 seconds hasn’t been overlooked on AdBlitz, though, which is a perfect example of how the extended creations can work a little magic.

Post Super Bowl commercial buzz with YouTube’s AdBlitz

Cadillac

The throwback and clever continuation to the Tim Burton film has grabbed the attention of “Edward Scissorhands” fans, with the 2021 Cadillac spot jumping into impressive territory.

Universal

Scotts & Miracle-Gro

https://youtu.be/-QKt8GtRUOA

John Travolta and his daughter Ella dancing a little nod to “Grease” in this spot have been a massive hit on social media, and that’s been the same over on AdBlitz.

Jeep

https://youtu.be/D2XYH-IEvhI

The power of Bruce Springsteen and the messaging behind this ad from Jeep has jumped over several spots...and they did so in one day.

Amazon

https://youtu.be/xxNxqveseyI

Amazon’s 2021 spot has gained a substantial view-count lead on AdBlitz—which has reached double-take status at this point. And while a lot of the attention can be placed on Michael B. Jordan’s “helpful” performance, the supporting cast is certainly worth a standing-O.

There’s more to come, so keep an eye on all the Big Game playlists over on AdBlitz!

Game day buzz with YouTube’s AdBlitz

Super Bowl Sunday has arrived, bringing with it a major amount of Big Game commercial buzz.

Pringles

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Meuc2d3SICM

Jeep

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D2XYH-IEvhI&t=4s

The 2020 USA TODAY Ad Meter winner released its latest Super Bowl spot at the stroke of midnight on 2/7, and the passionate narration by Bruce Springsteen—who also stars in the ad—  has already catapulted into views.

Bud Light

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X9jkvq4-tCU&feature=youtu.be

Bud Light tapped its own nostalgia in this Super Bowl ad, taking fans back to multiple eras of the beer brand’s Big Game spots. And it’s been a solid formula too, with the commercial steadily climbing the view-count ladder.

Bud Light Seltzer Lemonade

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g6CVKs77X74&t=1s

Another commercial that has people nodding in relatable unison is this spot from Bud Light Seltzer Lemonade. The topical, timely spin on the “lemons” that 2020 so unexpectedly provided is rising up the view-count charts and nearing an impressive mark.

Doritos

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BLuqtTn4610

Super Bowl commercial rush with YouTube’s AdBlitz: 5 ads that have topped 1 million views

Ahead of Super Bowl 55, these five spots have over one million on YouTube’s AdBlitz…and counting

Talk about creating room with views…

With Super Bowl 55 right on the doorstep, a few commercials that will be airing during or around Sunday’s big game have already grabbed the attention of online fans. Millions of online fans.

From clever takes on the Year 2020 to one boy’s questions while enjoying a burrito, the creative campaigns have reached the seven-figure mark on AdBlitz, a YouTube exclusive, and most fans haven’t even started to think about what food they’ll order yet.

Let’s take a look at the Big 5…

Under Armour

https://youtu.be/rF983mjsxcY

While this Big Game commercial isn’t part of the USA TODAY Ad Meter ratings, Under Armour’s latest spot featuring Michael Phelps has done a medal-worthy job of capturing that Olympic feeling—while also inspiring. The ad’s current view count has tipped the seven-figure mark on AdBlitz, and looks to still have a few laps left in it.

Bud Light Seltzer Lemonade

https://youtu.be/g6CVKs77X74

Bud Light Seltzer Lemonade’s 60-second commercial takes a lighthearted jab at some the unexpected pitfalls of 2020—the “lemons” the year provided to so many people, and their plans.

It’s resonated with commercial fans on AdBlitz, too, as the current view count has neared a new plateau.

Chipotle

https://youtu.be/BkXHqihY4RE

It’s a big jump from ducking citrus to this 30-second spot from first-time Super Bowl advertiser Chipotle. The little boy’s rapid fire questions about his burrito open up larger discussions about the company’s current effort on sustainable impact—and the topical, timely nature has placed the spot in a view count area on AdBlitz that not even one of their burrito shells could hold.

Budweiser

https://youtu.be/on04UnEzCt8

It has been 37 years since Budweiser didn’t have a Super Bowl commercial. Before the frogs, dogs and Clydesdales. But the beer company’s initiative to take the saved advertising dollars and redirect that toward COVID-19 vaccine awareness hasn’t gone unnoticed. This digital ad that Bud will be running around the game has already climbed into the top shelf of the beer aisle on AdBlitz.

Old Spice

https://youtu.be/czp_11uyVP0

While we haven’t heard much about this Old Spice ad being part of the Super Bowl Sunday cosmos, we can’t overlook the fact it’s near the top of the view-count hierarchy of Official Big Game ads on AdBlitz.

And we say “nearly,” because…

Amazon

More like Michale B. Creating Quite the Buzz on AdBlitz.

The Amazon spot that introduces one lady’s fantasy of an alternative body for Alexa—which happens to be actor Michael B. Jordan—has been the biggest hit on YouTube’s exclusive Big Game platform so far.
