Notre Dame’s Hannah Hidalgo sweeps weekly awards

What a player.

[autotag]Hannah Hidalgo[/autotag] continues to make people wonder who she is exactly. Only time will tell, but the early returns are extremely promising. It’s become typical to expect her to win ACC Rookie of the Week almost weekly, but she now is taking that a couple of steps further.

In addition to grabbing the rookie honors for the past week, she was named the ACC Player of the Week, but that wasn’t all. For the first time in her career, she also is the AP National Player of the Week. That’s as good as a freshman can be in the ACC.

Hidalgo played only one game during the past week, but it was a good one. She achieved her first career triple-double against Western Michigan with 26 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists to go with five steals. No triple-double in Irish history has been higher scoring, and only one other true freshman has had a triple-double at all.

Notre Dame got an early Christmas present this year in freshman phenom [autotag]Hannah Hidalgo[/autotag]. She not only is the national steals leader, but she’s among the top scorers in the country. Hidalgo has triple-double in Notre Dame win over Western Michigan

The Irish have one special player.

It’s hard to imagine [autotag]Hannah Hidalgo[/autotag] getting even better as her freshman season goes on. Yet she continues to exceed expectations by building her case as one of the best players in the country, period. She achieved her first career triple-double as Notre Dame demolished Western Michigan, 84-47.

The most danger the Irish (9-1) were in was when the Broncos (5-5) held a 9-4 lead in the first quarter. The Irish completely took over after that and never looked back, outscoring the Broncos in every quarter. Even with only eight players healthy, the Irish clearly were the better team. They held advantages in every statistical category, some of them bigger than others.

Hidalgo’s triple-double consisted of 26 points and career highs in rebounds (11) and assists (10). She also added to her national steals lead by picking up five more. When she checked out in the game’s final minute, she was greeted enthusiastically by her teammates and the Purcell Pavilion crowd.

[autotag]Anna DeWolfe[/autotag] scored most of her 17 points on 5-of-8 shooting from 3-point range. Maddy Westbeld had 15 points and eight rebounds. Also racking up big numbers in the rebounding department were [autotag]Kylee Watson[/autotag] (12), [autotag]KK Bransford[/autotag] (nine) and [autotag]Natalija Marshall[/autotag] (eight).

You probably can guess who represents Notre Dame on this list.

Notre Dame dominates Purdue – quick recap

It’s always good to beat Purdue!

The No. 14 Notre Dame women’s basketball team had no trouble at all against in-state rival Purdue Sunday, trouncing the Boilermakers 76-39.

Hannah Hidalgo had a great floor game for the Irish as she led in nearly every category.  Her 23 points, 10 rebounds, 8 assists, and 7 steals played a huge part in the game being such a blowout.

Nat Marshall was huge for Notre Dame, blocking six shots and scoring 14 points in the victory.

Notre Dame started hot, jumping out to an 11-0 lead before Purdue scored a point.  The Boilermakers bounced back quickly with a 7-0 run themeselves but that was about as close as things would get.

Notre Dame held Purdue to just 7 second quarter points and held a 35-18 halftime advantage in which they never looked back.

Before the game, a Muffet McGraw statue was unveiled outside Purcell Pavillion.  Much of the sold out crowd attended that ceremony before stepping in and watching the Irish dominate.

Notre Dame is now 8-1 on the season and hosts Western Michigan on Thursday at 6 p.m. ET.
