College Football Playoff Chase: Who’s Still Alive After Week 7

Who’s still alive in the chase to get into the 2020-2021 College Football Playoff?

Who’s still alive in the chase to get into the 2020-2021 College Football Playoff?

Starting with the unwritten rules of the College Football Playoff …

1) Win your Power Five championship and finish unbeaten, and you’re in. And yes, this will go for the Big Ten. The Pac-12 is a little iffy, though, with a six-game regular season, Go 7-0 with a conference title, and the Pac-12 will at least be on the doorstep.

2) Win your Power Five championship and finish with one loss, and in normal times you’re close to being a mortal lock. This year, the SEC champ is in with one loss no matter what, but it’s not so sure a thing across the board. This will be addressed in a moment.

3) Lose one game in the SEC, Big Ten, or this year, the ACC, with that one loss coming to a conference champion who’s off to the College Football Playoff. That’s how Alabama got in on the way to a title in 2017. Or, be dominant and have one loss that was by crazy circumstances, like Ohio State in 2016 despite losing to Penn State.

4) Win your Group of Five conference championship, go unbeaten, and pray for a whole lot of luck. We have yet to have a season with a slew of two-loss Power Five champions, but that’s what it would take for an unbeaten Group of Fiver to get in.

Teams that haven’t played yet, but really don’t have a shot

All of these teams will be in the hunt for an automatic New Year’s Six bowl slot if one goes unbeaten, but it’ll take something historically weird to get any sort of consideration for the College Football Playoff.

Conference USA
Rice

MAC
Akron, Ball State, Bowling Green, Buffalo, Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Kent State, Miami University, Northern Illinois, Ohio, Toledo, Western Michigan

Mountain West
Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, Hawaii, Nevada, New Mexico, San Diego State, San Jose State, UNLV, Utah State, Wyoming

Teams that haven’t played yet, but have a chance

Some might be longer shots than others, and some might be totally unrealistic, but if any of these teams go unbeaten with a conference championship, they’re almost certainly going to be in.

Big Ten
Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maryland, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Nebraska, Northwestern, Ohio State, Penn State, Purdue, Rutgers, Wisconsin

Pac-12
Arizona, Arizona State, Cal, Colorado, Oregon, Oregon State, Stanford, UCLA, USC, Utah, Washington, Washington State

College Football News Rankings 1-127: After Week 7

College Football News 2020 college football rankings after Week 7

College Football News 2020 college football rankings after Week 7

And now is when everything blows up … sort of.

As always, the rankings are based as much as possible on the results on the field, honoring the wins and losses and trying to keep it all as clean as possible.

That’s why – unless something goes haywire, like a bunch of upset conference wins  by ULM or Texas State – the Sun Belt teams are likely going to be ranked ahead of the Big 12 teams the rest of the way out, because – with the current exception of an unbeaten Oklahoma State – they have to be.

Louisiana blew out Iowa State in Ames, Arkansas State beat Kansas State in Manhattan, and Coastal Carolina’s win over Kansas made it 3-0 in the conference vs. conference matchup. Now that it’s all about the league games for the Sun Belt and the Big 12.

However, in conference play, this gets way funky now. For example, have fun with the SEC: Kentucky rolled Tennessee, Tennessee beat South Carolina, South Carolina beat Auburn, Auburn beat Arkansas – sort of; here’s where judgement start to come into play – Arkansas beat Ole Miss, and to come all the way around … Ole Miss beat Kentucky.

The SEC playing a conference-only schedule means the rankings are going to change around massively every week. The same goes for the ACC after Florida State’s win over North Carolina sends everything else into a tailspin.

In other words, this is the week when the rankings aren’t all clean and easy anymore. It’s going to get even more fun with the Big Ten and Mountain West getting going this week.

As always, if you have a beef or question about any of these rankings, first look at the schedule – that’s where most of the answers are.

Dallas Cowboys (2-3) vs Arizona Cardinals (3-2) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why Arizona Cardinals Will Win

Dallas won a football game again, but its defense is still totally miserable. It’s last in the NFL in points allowed, and it’s 0-3 when allowing more than 380 yards. The Arizona offense had a few problems when games got into a grind, but it has hit the 377-yard mark in four of the five games and is 3-0 when going over 400 yards. The Arizona Cardinals will come up with more than 400 yards.

Why Dallas Cowboys Will Win

With the loss of Dak Prescott, nothing is supposed to stop with the offense, but there will be adjustments. Expect the team to do what it should’ve been doing all along and running Ezekiel Elliott more. The Cowboys are 20th in the NFL in rushing attempts, and that’s about to change against an Arizona run defense that’s okay, but can be hit for well over 100 yards per game so far. However, all eyes will be on …

Fantasy Player To Watch

QB Andy Dalton, Dallas
Dak Prescott was on a historic statistical pace – partly because he’s great, and partly because his defense is a disaster – and now it’s up to Dalton to step right in and keep it all going. Don’t be totally shocked it he’s able to put up the big yards like Prescott did, hitting 9-of-12 passes for 111 yards after stepping in last week. Yeah, in this offense, he really might be one of the top starters.

What’s Going To Happen

The Dallas defense is still really, really bad. The team might be inspired this week, and the offense might finally figure out that it needs to feed No. 21 and keep feeding him. The Cowboys will come up with their share of good scoring drives, but this will be the Kyler Murray show – he has never lost in AT&T Stadium in high school on through college.

Week 7 10 Best College Picks vs. The Spread

[jwplayer rihtX0Ha]

Read the room.

What’s happening this college football season that the investment world is capitalizing on?

Overs. Lots and lots and lots of overs. As in 20 of 27 key games last weekend went over, and mostly by a whole lot. That’s hardly been an outlier in a season with no defense, the offenses way ahead, and with with crazy shootout after crazy shootout.

So let’s not fight the trend. Even if it doesn’t seem like it makes any sense, until this all changes the other way, go over. So while this is normally all about the best point total picks, this week, it’s finding the ten best overs.

If these games don’t go over, you can be sure that most of the others will.

10. Texas State at South Alabama

Point Total: 58
PICK: Over
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

Both teams have good, accurate defenses, and the two should play a fun game that will go down to the wire. Along the way, they’ll trade plenty of punches with offenses that can both throw without a problem. No Texas State game that didn’t hit overtime – like the 51-48 loss to UTSA – has hit 58, and none of the three South Alabama games have hit the mark. Whatever – these two are at the same level and should play in the 30s.

9. WKU at UAB

Point Total: 44.5
PICK: Over
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

This one’s a little different from the other overs on the list. It’s not going to be a shootout, but the 44.5 total is so freaking low that it’s just begging you to dive in. Don’t get hung up on UAB allowing 23 points in the last two games, and don’t get into a twist over a WKU offense that’s incapable of scoring more than 24 points – two of its four games have rolled past 44.5. It’s not going to be easy, but tases two should get to 50.

8. UCF at Memphis

Point Total: 75
PICK: Over
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

Bad Betting Advice 101: Take the over, just because you’re going to watch and it’ll be more fun. As amazing as the UCF offense is, only one of its three games moved past 75, and neither of the Memphis games have come close. Both teams have had time to prepare, and both teams should trade haymakers throughout as they play into the 40s.

7. Kansas at West Virginia

Point Total: 49.5
PICK: Over
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

Really? 49.5? West Virginia might be able to get there all by itself. The offense might have struggled a bit against Oklahoma State and Baylor – scoring 40 point combined in the two games – but it hung up 56 against Eastern Kentucky to start the season, and more importantly, Kansas allowed 47 points in each of its last two games. You likely only need two Jayhawk touchdowns to hit the over with ease.

6. Duke at NC State

Point Total: 59
PICK: Over
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

Duke might turn the ball over a bajillion times a week, but its games have been relatively high-scoring after two low-scoring clunkers to kick off the season. Over the last two weeks against Virginia Tech and Syracuse, the Blue Devil games early blew past 60 points. The last two NC State games got to 59 points, and the first two went way over.

10. Kansas at West Virginia

LINE: West Virginia -22.5
ATS PICK: West Virginia
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

This is a pick on straight principle. If Kansas finally decides to play a decent game and this doesn’t work, it’s not your fault.

West Virginia pulled off a win over Baylor, it had a few weeks to rest up, and it has the team in place to take down this win with ease over a Jayhawk team that hasn’t done anything on the lines so far.

Kansas? It lost to Baylor 47-14, got dropkicked by Oklahoma State by 40, and have lost its last seven games by double-digits. It might have pushed the Mountaineers in a 29-24 loss last year, but this year’s team is a whole lot stronger.

If it doesn’t hit the 22.5, blame West Virginia for not playing up to its level.

Week 6 Expert Picks & Predictions: NFL

9. Cincinnati at Tulsa

LINE: Cincinnati-3.5
ATS PICK: Cincinnati
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

Yeah, Tulsa has a strong defense, and yeah, it beat UCF, and yeah, Cincinnati isn’t the type of team that’s going to come out and hang 55 on the board, but the 3.5 is a bit of an insult.

This is a steady Bearcat team that does what it does, doesn’t get rattled, and it doesn’t have a whole lot of drama. It’s 3-0 with a fantastic defense that’s had time to prepare.

Don’t expect any sort of a shootout, and Tulsa might be a fun sleeper as the American Athletic Conference season goes on – especially if it pulls this off and has wins over UCF and Cincinnati under its belt – but if you like the Bearcats to win this, the 3.5 isn’t a barrier.

8. Army at UTSA

LINE: Army -8
ATS PICK: UTSA
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

UTSA could win this thing outright, much less cover the eight points.

Can the Roadrunners stop the run? Sort of – they’re not amazing defensively, but they mostly have problems against balanced offenses, and that’s not Army.

They held up well in the 27-20 loss at BYU, and they only lost by eight to a strong UAB team on the road. Yes, there’s a chance they can’t hit the curve and Army goes Army with 450 rushing yards, but at home, they’re strong with the points.

UTSA is 2-0 at home, Army is coming off a rough 14-9 win over a bad Citadel team, and it’s 0-1 on the road, falling its one test so far against a decent team.

Week 7 Schedule, Times, Lines, Previews

7. Ole Miss at Arkansas

LINE: Ole Miss -2.5
ATS PICK: Ole Miss
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

Are you a believer in Arkansas?

It shocked LSU, should’ve been given the win over Auburn, and it’s been one of the nicest surprises of the 2020 season under Sam Pittman.

But the offense still doesn’t work.

It’s averaging fewer than 20 points per game, it’s struggling to move the chains on third downs, and it’s dead last in the SEC in time of possession.

Ole Miss hasn’t played a lick of defense so far, but it’s offense has been unstoppable. The Hogs will have their best offensive game yet, but they’ll blink first.

Week 7 Expert Picks & Predictions: College

6. Kentucky at Tennessee

LINE: Tennessee -6
ATS PICK: Kentucky
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

This is all about not being all that certain what Kentucky is, while also not being entirely sold that Tennessee is about to be a thing.

On a historical basis, going with UK here is an awful play. The Cats have won once over the Vols since 2011 and just twice since 1984.

1-2 this season, it got its first win because Mississippi State threw 83 picks last week in a 24-2 loss.

Tennessee struggled to get by South Carolina, got rolled by Georgia, and blew out Missouri. Against UK, the Vols should pull this off at home, but Kentucky has the style and upside to at least keep this tight, sort of like it did in last year’s 17-13 loss.
