Marshall (2-0) vs WKU (1-2) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why Marshall Will Win

The running game has been fantastic in the two wins.

Running for 282 yards against Eastern Kentucky wasn’t any big whoop, but Brendan Knox and the ground attack rumbling over Appalachian State for 216 team yards was a huge deal in the 17-7 upset.

As continues to be the issue with WKU over the last few years, the team just can’t score. That doesn’t mean it can’t win – it came up with a 20-17 victory over Middle Tennessee last week – but getting past the 24-point mark is like pulling teeth.

If the Herd can get out to a hot start, it can rely on the ground attack to close this.

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

Why WKU Will Win

WKU might not be scoring in bunches, but it’s not screwing up. The team has yet to throw an interception in the first three games, and the two lost fumbles weren’t that big a deal.

Keep things close – WKU is good at doing that. Even if things aren’t working all that well, the Hilltoppers are great at not letting games get out of hand. Marshall isn’t going to run away and hide with this even if it does get out to a hot start.

The biggest key will be the defensive front against that Marshall running game. Liberty ripped through the Hilltoppers for 354 yards on the ground, but there’s enough talent up front to not get gouged for more than four yards per carry.

CFN Experts Picks: College Football

What’s Going To Happen

Marshall has the balance and the efficiency to pull out a tight battle.

Both defensive fronts can get behind the line, but Marshall will be able to run when needed, and WKU won’t.

UTEP (3-1) vs Louisiana Tech (2-1) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why UTEP Will Win

We live in a world where UTEP is 3-1. After so many years of pain and frustration, how is this happening?

The defense is doing a solid job of getting off the field, and the passing game is hitting the downfield passes for the first time in years.

Take out the outlier against Texas, and in the three wins, UTEP’s defense has allowed teams to convert just 5-of-31 third down tries – ULM was 0-for-11 – and QB Gavin Hardison is connecting on big plays to open things up a big, averaging over eight yards per pass.

On the flip side, Louisiana Tech’s D is a disaster on third downs – teams are hitting 60% of their tries.

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

Why Louisiana Tech Will Win

The Louisiana Tech offense might have had problems against BYU, but it’s putting up points in bunches.

The combination of Luke Anthony and Austin Allen have been fine for the passing attack, with Anthony throwing ten touchdown passes with two picks. UTEP’s defense might be playing better than it has in years, and it’s great on third downs, but let’s do a little roll slowing. The secondary is getting hit for enough deep plays to be a problem, but …

CFN Experts Picks: College Football

What’s Going To Happen

UTEP really is playing well – taking the Texas game a bit out of the mix. The running game is doing enough to have a little control in games, and the defense isn’t getting gouged, allowing 14 points or fewer in the three wins.

That slows down this week.

Louisiana Tech will get up early, the offense will set a pace UTEP can’t keep up with, and Skip Holtz’s team will get back on track after the 45-14 blasting at BYU.

Florida Atlantic (1-0) vs Southern Miss (1-3) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why Florida Atlantic Will Win

Run, run, and run some more. The Southern Miss defensive front has had its moments, but the only time it’s able to slow down a ground game is when the opposing offense is trying to bomb away.

So far, USM is 0-3 when allowing 163 rushing yards or more, and 1-0 when it allowed fewer – but North Texas threw for 339 yards in last weeks loss to the Golden Eagles.

The FAU running game got a big day out of new starting QB Nick Tronti – he ran for a team-high 94 yards and a touchdown – with the team averaging 6.6 yards per carry. The 217 yards helped take over the game, and it has to do that against a USM team that will want to make this a firefight.

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

Why Southern Miss Will Win

The Florida Atlantic passing game might need a little while.

The running game sort of worked, but Tronti struggled throwing it, hitting just 11-of-22 passes for 98 yards. He threw two touchdown passes, but there wasn’t anything happening deep, and the Owls didn’t do anything to control the clock.

Conditioning might matter. Southern Miss was sucking wind in early games, but now it has three games under its belt. Florida Atlantic just got going, but it only held the ball for 22 minutes and had a hard time putting the game away.

Southern Miss might be struggling, but it’s doing a good job at forcing takeaways with nine in the first four games. It could use a +2 turnover margin.

CFN Experts Picks: College Football

What’s Going To Happen

FIU’s offense will be better throwing the ball this week, but the win will come from the defense. It had a hard time against the Charlotte passing game last week, but it stiffened when it absolutely had to. It’ll be like that this week, too. USM will outgain FAU, but it won’t capitalize on its chances.

Middle Tennessee (0-4) vs FIU (0-1) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why Middle Tennessee Will Win

Yeah, Middle Tennessee is 0-4, but it can’t catch much of a break. The team is close, but it can’t come up with the big plays at the right time to finally get a win. However, the offense is starting to work.

The passing game is clicking, QB Asher O’Hara is playing well, and the turnovers finally slowed down after having massive issues in the first three games.

The FIU defense got ripped apart by Liberty in the 36-34 loss in the opener – the Blue Raider passing game should work.

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

Why FIU Will Win

Middle Tennessee really does have a problem with turnovers. For all of the good things the offense does, the nine giveaways in the first three games were a killer. The team was finally able to go a game without a turnover, and it still lost to WKU 20-17.

FIU didn’t play all that well in the loss to Liberty, and it still almost pulled off the win. The offense line did a good job for the running game, D’vonte Price ran for 148 yards and two scores, and there weren’t any turnovers.

CFN Experts Picks: College Football

What’s Going To Happen

FIU will be a +2 in turnover margin, Middle Tennessee will put up a ton of yards without the points to match, and Butch Davis will get the win in the home opener.

BYU (3-0) vs UTSA (3-1) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why UTSA Will Win

The Roadrunners have found an offense helped out by a defense that’s taking the ball away in bunches. They lead Conference USA – and are third in the nation – in takeaways, with it all starting from a defensive front that’s doing a great job of generating pressure and getting into the backfield.

Can UTSA hold up against the BYU running game? It allowed over 200 yards on the ground to UAB, and it’ll give up a few gashes here and there, but it’ll also come up with a big stop and play when needed. However …

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

Why BYU Will Win

BYU has been beyond dominant.

Navy, Troy, and Louisiana Tech might not be SEC teams, but they’re all bowl-caliber programs that got ripped to shreds by a Cougar tam that’s doing everything right.

It’s not screwing up – BYU leads the nation with the fewest penalties – the pass defense is among the best in the nation, and the offense is the most efficient in college football. QB Zach Wilson has hit 85% of his passes for 949 yards and six touchdowns with one pick, and he ran for five touchdowns.

Add that with the power ground game, and it’s all working.

CFN Experts Picks: College Football

What’s Going To Happen

UTSA is playing well, and it’s going to be competitive throughout the Conference USA season, but it’s about to get thrown into the wood-chipper. BYU has played better than anyone in the nation over the first three games, and the great production on the lines will lead the way to yet another blowout.

USF (1-2) vs East Carolina (0-2) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why USF Will Win

The East Carolina defense hasn’t shown up yet.

It got destroyed by UCF, which no one will complain too much about. It got destroyed at Georgia State, and then there’s a problem.

It’s not just that the Pirates were bad in both losses – giving up a combined 100 points – it’s that they didn’t have an answer for anything. Both UCF and Georgia State threw and ran equally well.

The USF offense struggled against Notre Dame and Cincinnati, but those are two top ten-caliber teams. The ground game should work against an ECU defensive front not even close to doing anything behind the line.

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

Why East Carolina Will Win

East Carolina might not be doing a whole lot of things well, but it’s doing them deliberately.

There’s a good and a bad to owning the tome of possession battle. On the good side, ECU has been okay at keeping the chains moving with a decent passing attack to keep developing. However, offenses are scoring fast on the porous D.

ECU might have the ball for 35 minutes if the USF running game can’t swing right away.

CFN Experts Picks: College Football

What’s Going To Happen

USF has a bit of a defense – it does lead the nation in pass D, but that’s because it’s getting run over – but not enough offense. East Carolina has a decent offense and no defense.

The USF offense wins the day as head coach Jeff Scott gets his first win over an FBS team.

Navy (1-2) vs Temple (0-0) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why Navy Will Win

Just how in shape are the Temple Owls?

They were supposed to start their season against Miami, and then play Idaho, and then deal with Rutgers before playing Navy in late September. Instead, all four – Temple was supposed to play UMass this weekend – non-conference games were cancelled.

Navy has struggled – getting obliterated by BYU and Air Force, and needing a late comeback to beat Tulane – but it had three games to get the machine in motion. Temple has to come up with a slew of new starting parts on the end and in the linebacking corps.

Navy’s option offense isn’t how you want to get everything in place for the season. This Temple team will need time and seasoning, but …

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

Why Temple Will Win

Saying Navy has struggled was kind. Outside of two quarters, it’s been flat awful.

The running game isn’t working – falling to hit 120 yards against either BYU or Air Force – and the run D has been obliterated. It’s the worst in the nation, allowing 312 yards per game – ten yards more than anyone else, and with Ole Miss the only other team giving up more than 300 a game.

In the first game of the tear, Temple isn’t going to get too quirky. Early on, the Owl O line will be one of the team’s biggest strengths. The backfield is deep enough to form a good rotation.

CFN Experts Picks: College Football

What’s Going To Happen

Temple might be rusty, but start running, keep running, and own the lines – Navy isn’t stopping a thing.

The Owl offense isn’t going to have the firepower needed to win this in a blowout, but they’ve had plenty of time to prepare for the options. The ground game will roll for over 200 yards.

Houston (0-0) vs Tulane (2-1) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why Houston Will Win

Houston certainly had time to rest up and prepare.

Rice … no.

at Washington State … no.

at Memphis … North Texas … no, no.

The Cougars have had to sit around for more than a month to finally kick off its season, and considering the interesting move by head coach Dana Holgorsen to – after the first four games – make the 2019 season about preparing for 2020, it’s been a long, long time since the program has had to wait.

The passing game has a whole lot of good parts, the offensive line should be terrific, and the defense is loaded with veterans.

Let’s just say this group is salty and ready to go.

Tulane hasn’t had to face any sort of passing game like it’s about to deal with. South Alabama threw for 321 yards in the opener, and Southern Miss threw for 299 – both Green Wave wins – but those two don’t have the weapons in the receiving corps the Cougars are about to bring.

Marquez Stevenson is a next-level talent, but he’s not along with almost all the top targets from last year returning for Clayton Tune to throw to.

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

Why Tulane Will Win

The Houston defense has a long way to go from the late part of last year to merely be okay.

There’s experience with most of the top tacklers returning, but is the team really in game shape? It’s been one of the big issues for teams early this season – conditioning. Tulane not only has three games under its belt, but it had two weeks to rest up after hanging 66 on Southern Miss.

The Green Wave might have a few quarterback issues after Keon Howard was replaced by Michael Pratt in the win over Southern Miss, but the ground attack is rolling with 882 yards and 14 scores in three games.

Forget about hammering the ball – the Green Wave offense will work on the outside and see if the Cougars can run.

CFN Experts Picks: College Football

What’s Going To Happen

Can Tulane be patient? It’s managed to be a second half team so far – for the most part – as it takes a little while for the machine to warm up. Houston has to get up early, strike, and try to hang on for dear life late as Tulane’s fitness will be a factor.

Houston will have to come up with a late stop to hang on, and it’ll get it in a fun battle with wild mood swings.
