Houston vs Tulane Game Preview

Why Tulane Will Win

Okay, Tulane, who exactly are you?

Are you the team that’s fourth in the nation in total defense, fourth in the nation in pass defense, and eighth in the nation in scoring D?

Are you the team that stuffed the Kansas State team that went on to beat Oklahoma a week later, or are you the team that couldn’t get past Southern Miss despite playing better in almost every way?

The defense gets a Houston team that’s making every game an adventure. There isn’t a penalty the Cougars don’t like to commit – with ten or more in every game – the pass defense is non-existent, and …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Houston Will Win

The offense is working.

It struggled in the loss to Texas Tech, but the passing game was accurate over the last two weeks against Kansas and Rice, and the running game is starting to perk up.

The team might be a disappointment considering the high expectations to start the season, but there’s still plenty of time to get on a roll, win the American Athletic Conference, and possibly get the New Year’s Six bowl bid as long as the team can finally start playing consistently well.

Tulane might have a killer defense, but it’s not doing much to generate a pass rush and it’s not taking the ball away. Give the Houston skill parts time and big things happen.

With all that said, to be nice and polite about it …

What’s Going To Happen

WAKE UP, HOUSTON.

The team has so many great parts, talent, and potential that it should be far better than it played over the first four weeks.

Tulane isn’t quite as weird, but the last two games have been confusing – Southern Miss shouldn’t have been a problem at home after the way the D played against Kansas State.

Houston’s offense will be just good enough when it has to be to get out of this alive, but like every other game it won’t be easy. The Tulane defense is the real deal and will keep it close throughout.

When the Cougar defensive line absolutely has to get into the backfield, it’ll do it. It just won’t play well enough early to not need the big stop late.

Houston vs Tulane Game Preview

Why Houston Will Win

The Tulane defense is having a few issues.

To be very, very fair, having Ole Miss, Oklahoma, East Carolina, UAB on the slate doesn’t help, but this is a veteran group that’s supposed to be better than allowing 482 yards and 40 points per game.

Houston has hardly been perfect, but the defense has been stunningly solid overall after the season-opening loss to Texas Tech.

The Cougars are great at getting off the field on third downs, the run D held up just fine against Navy and Tulsa, and there’s a whole lot pressure in the backfield.

However …

Week 6 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Tulane Will Win

Tulane’s offensive line hasn’t been bad.

It’s been good in pass protection and the running game hasn’t been bad when the team actually uses it.

At home, this is one of those best-someone-your-own-size moments. The Green Wave need to cut down on the turnovers, but there’s a passing game to push the Cougar secondary that hasn’t been tested all that much.

With a good punting game – field position should matter – and with the defense getting a wee bit of a break compared to most of the season so far, this is where the season momentum might turn if the Green Wave D can just come up with a few positive stops early.

Week 6 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

The fantastic 2019 Tulane win broke the Cougars.

It was head coach Dana Holgorsen’s first year at Houston and there wasn’t a whole lot of luck happening early with two losses in the first three games. A crazy finish led to the build-for-2020-plan which for a whole slew of reasons didn’t work.

This isn’t exactly a full circle moment – the Cougars won the 2020 season opener over Tulane 49-31 – but it sort of is. This is when the program is supposed to be kicking it in under Holgorsen, but it’s about to get Tulane’s best shot.

The Green Wave will be creative as the offense gets going early, but it won’t be enough. Houston is playing too well defensively and QB Clayton Tune has been too accurate to lose this.

Why Tulane Will Win

Tulane pulled up out of a four-game losing streak nosedive with a 77-70 win over Tulsa with a great defensive performance in the second half and with one of its better shooting games.

The Green Wave might struggle from three and don’t shoot all that well in general, but they’re solid at forcing mistakes – the got ten steals against the Golden Hurricane – and they make up for several problems by hitting everything from the free throw line.

They made nine more free throws – they’re the best in the AAC on the line – and they need to keep attacking the rim. Houston commits a ton of fouls, but …

Why Houston Will Win

The first two games were ugly.

The Cougars rolled Tulane 71-50 in early January and 83-60 a few weeks later by shooting well, stopping the Green Wave offense from doing anything consistently right, and by coming up with lots and lots and LOTS of rebounds, 87 in all.

Tulane has to get way hot really fast, the passing has to be better and sharper against the nation’s second-best D, and it has to at least hold its own on the glass.

What’s Going To Happen

Houston has the exact wrong type of team for Tulane.

The Cougars are too strong from the field and too tough defensively. Making things even worse is their ability on the free throw line – the Green Wave can’t even count on winning the free throw battle.

The only way to beat Houston is to hit 45% or better from three – at least to get into the discussion – and that’s not going to happen.

Houston (0-0) vs Tulane (2-1) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why Houston Will Win

Houston certainly had time to rest up and prepare.

Rice … no.

at Washington State … no.

at Memphis … North Texas … no, no.

The Cougars have had to sit around for more than a month to finally kick off its season, and considering the interesting move by head coach Dana Holgorsen to – after the first four games – make the 2019 season about preparing for 2020, it’s been a long, long time since the program has had to wait.

The passing game has a whole lot of good parts, the offensive line should be terrific, and the defense is loaded with veterans.

Let’s just say this group is salty and ready to go.

Tulane hasn’t had to face any sort of passing game like it’s about to deal with. South Alabama threw for 321 yards in the opener, and Southern Miss threw for 299 – both Green Wave wins – but those two don’t have the weapons in the receiving corps the Cougars are about to bring.

Marquez Stevenson is a next-level talent, but he’s not along with almost all the top targets from last year returning for Clayton Tune to throw to.

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

Why Tulane Will Win

The Houston defense has a long way to go from the late part of last year to merely be okay.

There’s experience with most of the top tacklers returning, but is the team really in game shape? It’s been one of the big issues for teams early this season – conditioning. Tulane not only has three games under its belt, but it had two weeks to rest up after hanging 66 on Southern Miss.

The Green Wave might have a few quarterback issues after Keon Howard was replaced by Michael Pratt in the win over Southern Miss, but the ground attack is rolling with 882 yards and 14 scores in three games.

Forget about hammering the ball – the Green Wave offense will work on the outside and see if the Cougars can run.

CFN Experts Picks: College Football

What’s Going To Happen

Can Tulane be patient? It’s managed to be a second half team so far – for the most part – as it takes a little while for the machine to warm up. Houston has to get up early, strike, and try to hang on for dear life late as Tulane’s fitness will be a factor.

Houston will have to come up with a late stop to hang on, and it’ll get it in a fun battle with wild mood swings.
