5. Winners & Losers From Week 6

The One Really Big Thing
Most Overrated Thing
Most Underrated Thing
What It All Means, Week 6

Winner: The Over

If it seemed like every game was a wild and wacky offensive fun-fest, you’re right. Out of the 27 main FBS vs. FBS games this weekend, 20 of them hit the over on the Vegas point total, and seven went under.

The SEC went particularly insane, with Texas A&M-Florida going 21.5 over the total, South Carolina-Vanderbilt going 6.5 over, Missouri-LSU going 35 over, Georgia-Tennessee going 20 over, Arkansas-Auburn going 12.5 over, and Alabama-Ole Miss went a whopping 40.5 points over the point total.

There was one SEC game that didn’t quite get there …

Loser: Mississippi State

The Bulldogs lost 24-2 to Kentucky – the point total was 57.5, by the way – despite outgunning the Wildcats 295 to 157 and holding on to the ball for almost 35 minutes. The problem? Six turnovers, all interceptions.

Winner: RB Najee Harris, Alabama

He’s not close to leading the nation in rushing, but is ten touchdown runs are two more than Iowa State’s Breece Hall. No one else has more than seven. In the win over Ole Miss, Harris ran 23 times for a hard 206 yards and five scores – averaging nine yards per carry – with three catches for 42 yards.

Rip up Georgia this week, and he’s in the lead for the Heisman. There’s one problem with that …

Loser: Tennessee running game

Georgia leads the nation in run defense, allowing just 38 yards per game on the ground. Pitt is No. 2 allowing 52 yards per game, and everyone else has given up 70 or more. So you’ll forgive Tennessee – who was great on the ground in its first two games – for its problems on Saturday in the 44-21 loss with -1 yard on 27 carries.

Winner: QB Phil Jurkovec, Boston College

How this for a transfer coming though better than expected? Jurkovec came to Boston College from Notre Dame to run new head coach Jeff Hafley’s offense, and so far he hit the 300-yard passing mark in three of the four games with eight touchdown passes, two picks, and three rushing scores. He threw for a season-high 358 yards and three touchdowns in the 31-30 upset overtime win over Pitt.

Loser: Syracuse offensive line

It’s been a rough start for the Orange front five, allowing a nation-high 21 sacks in the first four games. Only Duke with 19 has allowed more than 16, but it only gave up two in the 38-24 win at Syracuse. How many times did the Blue Devils get to the quarterback? Six, with nine tackles for loss.

Winner: North Carolina

Roll call on the great – or, at least, pretty decent – state of North Carolina. Appalachian State and Wake Forest were off, but …

Charlotte beat North Texas 49-21; Duke won at Syracuse 38-24; East Carolina whacked USF 44-24; North Carolina got it done against Virginia Tech 56-45; and NC State rolled Virginia 38-21.

By the way, four of those five games were on the road.

Loser: Florida

UCF didn’t play this weekend. That’s the most positive thing to happen to any FBS team in Florida.

Florida Atlantic had to postpone its game against Southern Miss due to COVID-19 issues.

Florida’s defense went bye-bye in the 41-38 loss to Texas A&M; Florida State got trucked by Notre Dame 42-26; Miami got blown away by Clemson 42-17 in a game that wasn’t even that close; East Carolina got its first win of the season at USF with a 44-24 blasting; and FIU, at home, handed Middle Tennessee its first win of the year.

At least the Dolphins were fantastic.

College Football Hot Seat Coach Rankings: After Week 6

Which coaches are on the hottest seats and under the most pressure after Week 6 of the college football season?

Which coaches are on the hottest seats and under the most pressure after Week 6 of the college football season?

Contact/Follow @ColFootballNews & @PeteFiutak

Which ten coaches are going to be feeling it if they don’t win … NOW.

The hot seat rankings are done in two ways. First, the five coaches who need a win for job security, and then the five coaches who aren’t in any real danger of being fired but could use a rainbow.

[jwplayer IoO8SIHX]

Coaches On The Hot Seat: Win, Or Else

5. Rick Stockstill, Middle Tennessee

He got a very, very much-needed win over FIU for the first victory of the season for the Blue Raiders, but it will be a big problem if there isn’t a run of wins to follow with North Texas, at Rice and Charlotte up next. Anything less than 2-1 won’t be okay.

4. Dino Babers, Syracuse

The Orange are destined for a fourth losing season in five ears under Babers following a 38-24 home loss to a previously winless Duke. With that, Syracuse is 3-7 in its last ten games. Lose at home to Liberty next week, and the seat becomes flaming with a trip to Clemson to follow.

3. Derek Mason, Vanderbilt

October 19th of 2019. that was the last time Vanderbilt won a game over an FBS team, going 1-9 during that stretch and 2-13 in the last 15 games against the big league programs. Being plucky is nice, but the Commodores have scored 26 points int eh first three games with two straight 41-7 blastings.

2. Seth Littrell, North Texas

One of the hot young coaches after two nine-win seasons, North Texas went 4-8 last year and started out 1-3 this season. The defense has been miserable – allowing over 45 points per game – with the program going 1-7 in its last eight games against FBS programs. With Middle Tennessee and UTEP up next on the road, this is when the Mean Green have to get going.

1. Matt Viator, ULM

How bad have the Warhawks been? The’ve been outscored 181-67 in the first five games – all losses – and now the defense is on a run of 11 straight games giving up 31 points or more. In his fifth season, this is going to be a fifth year without a winning record.

College Football Playoff Chase: Who’s Still Alive After Week 6

Who’s still alive in the chase to get into the 2020-2021 College Football Playoff?

Who’s still alive in the chase to get into the 2020-2021 College Football Playoff?

Contact/Follow @ColFootballNews & @PeteFiutak

As always, the unwritten rules of the College Football Playoff have to be taken into account …

1) Win your Power Five championship and finish unbeaten, and you’re in. And yes, this will go for the Big Ten. The Pac-12 is a little iffy, though, with a six-game regular season, Go 7-0 with a conference title, and the Pac-12 will at least be on the doorstep.

2) Win your Power Five championship and finish with one loss, and in normal times you’re close to being a mortal lock. This year, the SEC champ is in with one loss no matter what, but it’s not so sure a thing across the board. This will be addressed in a moment.

3) Lose one game in the SEC, Big Ten, or this year, the ACC, with that one loss coming to a conference champion who’s off to the College Football Playoff. That’s how Alabama got in on the way to a title in 2017. Or, be dominant and have one loss that was by crazy circumstances, like Ohio State in 2016 despite losing to Penn State.

4) Win your Group of Five conference championship, go unbeaten, and pray for a whole lot of luck. We have yet to have a season with a slew of two-loss Power Five champions, but that’s what it would take for an unbeaten Group of Fiver to get in.

With all of that in mind, this is broken down into five categories.

Finished. Done. Let’s go take a steam
The Group of Five hopefuls
One-loss teams still alive
Unbeaten College Football Playoff contenders

[jwplayer IoO8SIHX]

Teams that haven’t played yet, but really don’t have a shot

All of these teams will be in the hunt for an automatic New Year’s Six bowl slot if one goes unbeaten, but it’ll take something historically weird to get any sort of consideration for the College Football Playoff.

Conference USA

Mountain West
Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, Hawaii, Nevada, New Mexico, San Diego State, San Jose State, UNLV, Utah State, Wyoming

Teams that haven’t played yet, but have a chance

Some might be longer shots than others, and some might be totally unrealistic, but if any of these teams go unbeaten with a conference championship, they’re almost certainly going to be in.

Big Ten
Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maryland, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Nebraska, Northwestern, Ohio State, Penn State, Purdue, Rutgers, Wisconsin

The College Football News bowl projections, and the predictions for the College Football Playoff after Week 6.

The College Football News bowl projections, and the predictions for the College Football Playoff after Week 6.

A few rules to remember.

1) The RedBox (Big Ten vs. Pac-12), SoFi Hawaii (Mountain West vs. AAC or C-USA) and Bahamas (C-USA vs. MAC) aren’t playing this year.

2) The NCAA is pushing towards blowing off records for this one year for bowl eligibility. The bowls aren’t likely to take the true dogs, but there probably won’t be enough winning teams – and there certainly won’t be enough six-win teams – to get bowl eligible. The goal is to fill in all the contracted bowl tie-ins.

Texas vs Oklahoma: 5 Thoughts On The Sooners 53-45 Win Over The Longhorns

5 thoughts and an instant reaction on the Oklahoma 53-45 win over Texas.

5. Remember, this all started because of THAT third down pass

Let’s start with this …

The finish saved us all from the Lincoln Riley Can’t Coach thing that social media was cranking up.

The amazing finishing kick and overtimes helped stop that, but the Sooners were just this close to losing a third straight game after being up by double digits late.

On the flip side …

Oklahoma was just this close to being 4-0 and ranked fourth in the nation, but even with this win, the team needs to find a closer.

To be fair, the Sooners don’t have the running backs they were supposed to going into the offseason, and Spencer Rattler isn’t the veteran quarterback who’s been through the wars – until now, and more on that in a moment – but this has now become a pattern.

It takes a whole series of events and issues to blow two games in a row like Oklahoma did before surviving this.

It was one pass that screwed things up.

Texas was still going to get the ball back no matter what, but on 3rd and 9 on the Sooner 43 – and with time running and the Longhorns with no timeouts – Riley chose to throw for the first down.

If Rattler hits his throw, Oklahoma wins in regulation and it’s a whole different story. The play was broken up, Texas had enough time to come up with something special, and then this became one of the most amazing Red River Showdowns ever, partly because …

4. Sam Ehlinger did absolutely everything he could possibly do

Ehlinger’s last pass for an interception was how it all ended, but he put on one amazing show to at least get Texas back into the mix.

He was brilliant in the final four minutes, finished with 287 yards and two touchdown passes and ran for 112 yards and four scores, but … those two interceptions.

It’s hard to fault No. 11 for the two mistakes when he had to carry the whole team on his shoulders.

The defense couldn’t tackle in key moments early on, the running backs combined for just 11 carries, and the offense was Ehlinger, Ehlinger, and more Ehlinger.

Bijan Robinson is a five-star running back – he ran just five times. The receivers didn’t make enough big things happen with the ball in their hands, and the defense didn’t help in overtime.

This was almost going to go down as the Sam Ehlinger game, but …

3. The maturity of Spencer Rattler

It wasn’t Rattler’s fault that he didn’t have the at-bats logged in to be comfortable late against Kansas State and Iowa State, but welcome to the working definition of the “needs to take his lumps” cliché.

The guy might have played a bit like a redshirt freshman before, but he just advanced up a few grades after the way he came through in overtime.

He struggled early, gave up a bad turnover, seemingly banged up his shoulder, got benched, and then came back in and fought through the adversity of yet another fourth quarter collapse to start to look the part again.

There’s no questioning his talent or ability, but he didn’t have the experience of Baker Mayfield, Kyler Murray, or Jalen Hurts when those three took over the Lincoln Riley offense. Maybe Murray didn’t have a ton of time logged in, but he had been around the block at Texas A&M before going to OU.

This Texas game was over.

OU blew it, Ehlinger was magical, and all of the momentum was on the other side of the field after the Longhorns got up 38-31 in overtime.

Rattler stepped it up on Oklahoma’s possession – calmly hitting a 3rd-and-8 throw for a score – kept his head, didn’t make any major mistakes, and pushed his way in for a touchdown in the second overtime and threw a touchdown pass in the third as he looked and played like huge things are coming very, very soon.

Patience isn’t warranted at a football program like Oklahoma, but give it a little more time. No. 7 can play.
