Yeah, it struggled from the outside against Arkansas, it missed a few too many free throws, and the defense wasn’t great … and it lost on the road by two to a strong, fired up team.

Ole Miss isn’t all that bad, but it won’t come close to keeping up on the boards and it won’t shoot well enough to keep up.

Everyone who seems to matter got popped on Saturday with the top six teams in the last AP Poll going down.

Duke beat Syracuse 97-72 on the road.

This isn’t a consistent team lately, and there are just enough concerns to think there could be a problem in a few weeks once the season really starts, but it’s on a six-game winning streak and with 11 wins in the last 12 games.

It starts with an offense that’s moving the ball around insanely well.

26 assists against Syracuse. 25 against Florida State. 17 against Wake Forest. The points are leading to easy baskets, the threes have been dropping, and outside of issues with a pesky Virginia, things are rolling.

And then there’s Pitt, with two losses in a row and six in the last nine, but …

Why Pitt Will Win

Just how much will Duke really be into this?

It wins the ACC regular season title outright with a win in this and a Notre Dame loss to Florida State, but its focus might be on North Carolina on Saturday, the ACC Tournament, and the NCAA Tournament to come.

At least that’s the hope.

On the flip side of Duke, Pitt isn’t moving the ball around all that well.

It doesn’t have the scoring punch to keep up and it’s not hitting from the outside. However, it’s got a good inside presence and it comes up with lots and lots of rebounds.

This is going to be all about energy and momentum.

Pitt has to own the defensive glass – Duke can dominate when it’s getting the offensive boards – and it has to slow the game down to a dead stop at times.

It was able to beat NC State by being great at the free throw line and dominating the rebounds with a +18 margin.

Why Purdue Will Win

Win this, beat Indiana, and Purdue is at worst the Big Ten co-regular season champion.

That actually doesn’t mean much of anything in a tournament-crazed sport, but it still looks nice on a t-shirt.

Things were rolling along just fine with nine wins in ten games before the offense fell flat with a thud in the 68-65 loss to Michigan State on Saturday.

The O hit just one of nine threes and the defense was less than stellar. The latter was the norm, the former was an anomaly.

Even with the threes not showing up, the Boilermakers were still in the game late because they were hitting everything else on the inside.

They weren’t themselves – there were too many turnovers, they couldn’t find a groove, and again, this is a much, much better team from three than it showed.

Why Wisconsin Will Win

Wisconsin was able to beat the Boilermakers in West Lafayette in early January even when the Purdue threes were falling.

It might not always be pretty, but the team stepped its game up in a big, big way over the last two weeks since the loss to Rutgers. It’s not like the literal fight with Michigan took the team up a notch, but it certainly was a galvanizing moment.

The offense is hitting from the outside, the overall shooting has been a whole lot better, and the defense has been fantastic at guarding the three – three of the last four teams failed to get to 30% from three.

No, Wisconsin can’t get into a shootout if Purdue goes off, but …

What’s Going To Happen

The Badgers win the Big Ten regular season title – at least a share of it – with a win over Purdue. They take it outright no matter what with a win and then hits the layup against Nebraska.

The Kohl Center is going to be a thing.

It’s not like Wisconsin is unbeatable at home, but it’s more like it’s not getting Purdue on its home floor. The Boilermakers are almost untouchable in Mackey … almost.

They’re 15-1 at home, and that 1 was against Wisconsin.

This won’t be anything beautiful, but the Badgers will battle back after getting down fast.

Purdue will come out running and rolling. It’ll hit a few threes to establish that the Michigan State debacle is over, and then it’ll all slow down.

Wisconsin will chip away at the lead, clamp down late, and it’ll survive with one big late shot and one more defensive stop.

It’s been a rough run lately with five losses in the last six games, but the defense continues to be solid, the offense is moving the ball around well, and no one in the American Athletic Conference shoots more threes.

It’s going to bomb away. It’s just a question of whether or not a few more shots go in.

The Bearcats only hit four of their 20 threes in the 80-58 loss to Houston back in early February, but that was one of their worst shooting days of the year.

Cincinnati has to somehow keep this close, hit a few more threes to put the pressure on, and get Houston to the free throw line. The Cougars only hit 66% on the line.

Why Houston Will Win

Cincinnati hasn’t exactly caught fire offensively since that loss to the Cougars.

Again, its defense is okay, but the shooting has been a disaster from the outside. The O has failed to get past 25% from three in four of the last five games and in seven of the last ten.

Houston isn’t lighting it up outside, either, but it’s making up for it with a whole lot points on the move and a ton of assists and good passes for easy points.

How well are the Cougars moving the ball? They have 20 assists in each of the last two games and lead the AAC overall.

What’s Going To Happen

Houston is playing better and better at just the right time, and Cincinnati has picked the wrong time to hit a rough patch. Neither trend will stop here.

The Cougars will hit more threes than they did in the first meeting, but they won’t be consistent enough from the inside and won’t be able to match a few quick Houston runs.

And now the team is back home and looking to get put Colorado game well in the rearview mirror.

The Wildcats were rocked 79-63 in Boulder on Saturday, but that was an aberration. The shooting wasn’t there, the passing was awful, and Colorado owned the momentum of the home crowd to get the big win.

Everyone has a bad day.

Arizona should show off the firepower to push past a USC team with a good offense, but would like to keep this a low-scoring fight. The Trojans don’t take a ton of threes, they don’t force a whole lot of mistakes for easy points, and potentially worst of all considering this was one of the few positives for Arizona against Colorado, the free throw shooting hasn’t been great.

The Wildcats should be able to move the ball around better, and that should make everything else work.

Why USC Will Win

USC is one of the few teams that can hang with Arizona on the boards.

Really, how did Colorado beat Arizona like that? Again, the defense was terrific and the offense timely, but the team hit the boards hard on both ends – it ended up even in rebounding margin.

USC is fifth in the nation in total rebounds and hits the glass hard on both ends. The offensive boards and second chance points were there for the Trojans in the first meeting – a 72-63 loss – but those might not be needed quite as much.

As good as USC is on the boards, it’s was off from the outside in the loss. Now it got its groove back.

What’s Going To Happen

USC is on a nice six-game winning streak since the loss to Arizona including tough wins on the road against Oregon State (bad) and Oregon (good).

It’s shooting a whole lot better, the defense has been great outside of the close call against the Beavers, and it should all work in a tough, tough battle that might be a Pac-12 Championship preview …

It’ll work for about 38 minutes.

USC has had its moments from the free throw line, but it’s not consistent and hits 67% overall on the season.

Arizona hasn’t always been a rock, but it’s been great on the line in the last few road games and will come up with a few extra late in a thriller.

Las Vegas has been able to get to this point on low scoring fights – it hasn’t scored more than 23 in any of its last five games – but it’s not taking the ball away, it’s making too many mistakes, and it just doesn’t have the ability to keep up the pace – maybe.

The Raider passing game is solid, but the Chargers should be able to take more chances – again, the Vegas D doesn’t generate takeaways. Worse yet in a game like this the mistakes are going to matter. Las Vegas has given it away 12 times in the last four games with no takeaways.

Why Las Vegas Will Win

The defense has stepped up its game.

The Raider defense stopped the great Brown and Bronco running games cold, and they only allowed 262 yards of Indianapolis offense last week. Overall, it hasn’t allowed more than 300 yards to anyone but Kansas City over the last five games.

The offense has to get Derek Carr hot right away. Josh Jacobs and the running game have been better over the three-game winning streak, and it should work against one of the league’s softest run defenses. That’s not going to be enough.

This should be a shootout, and Carr has gone for over 200 yards in ten of his last 11 games.

What’s Going To Happen

Win and get in – and no, don’t start with the scenarios if there’s a tie. Lose, and that’s it.

The playoffs start now.

The Raiders have been a wonderful story with their three-game winning streak – Rich Bisaccia deserves Coach of the Year consideration – but they’re far more banged up than the Chargers and they don’t have the same offensive punch.

The Los Angeles defense has a way of keeping everyone in the game, but this will be Herbert’s time. He’ll do a bit more than Carr, and the maligned Charger defense will come up with the two takeaways the Raider side won’t.
