UCLA vs Arizona State Game Preview

Why Arizona State Will Win

How did Arizona State do it the first time around?

It beat UCLA in a three-overtime thriller a few weeks ago after shooting well from the three, doing a solid job on the boards, and holding on for dear life late before rolling in that third extra frame.

The record might not be all that great, and it’s almost certainly going to be a losing season, but this is a better team than it seems. It hasn’t been too bad from three when it takes its chances, the defense has been terrific, and the offense moves the ball around well.

UCLA has been really, really flaky from three and it has offensive stalls once in a while. As long as this doesn’t come down to a free throw contest, Arizona State should be able to hang around.

Why UCLA Will Win

Yeah, you think UCLA will be a wee bit fired up to get revenge after Arizona State’s win back in Tempe?

Nah, it probably isn’t going to be that jacked to do that, but it certainly won’t take the Sun Devils lightly.

The Bruin defense will pack it in, force the Sun Devils to try hitting from the outside, and then it’ll rely on the offensive punch to take care of the rest.

Arizona State might do a great job defensively, and it’ll get its share of rebounds, but as long as UCLA is able to move the ball around like it did in the first game, limit the turnovers, and hit something from three once in a while, there won’t be any drama.

What’s Going To Happen

UCLA will be too good offensively at home.

Arizona State struggles as is to put points on the board, but it has a big-time problem when it gets out of its friendly confines – again, forget about anything from three from this group.

The Sun Devil D will be good enough to keep this from getting too ugly, but UCLA will get a decent, business-like win with one first half offensive burst.

Indiana vs Ohio State Game Preview

Why Indiana Will Win

The Hoosiers might be struggling way too much lately, but they were able to get Ohio State back in early January 67-51 despite not making anything from three – they were just 2-of-15.

But that’s what IU does.

This just isn’t a good three-point shooting team, and it’s not going to start against an Ohio State defense that’s clamping down hard on the outside.

It has to take advantage of every scoring opportunity. It has to keep the ball moving, win the rebounding battle, and not worry about giving up a whole slew of transition points.

Ohio State just doesn’t force steals, Indiana is decent on the inside defensively and is first overall in the Big Ten in field goal percentage D, and …

Why Ohio State Will Win

Yeah, Indiana just isn’t consistent enough scoring.

It needs this to be played in the low 60s and it can’t rely on hitting anything from the outside.

Even worse for what should be a low scoring game like this, Indiana isn’t great on the free throw line – it struggles to get anywhere close to 80%.

Ohio State might not force a ton of takeaways, but it doesn’t make mistakes and it’s sharp from the field. It might not do a ton from the outside, either, but it’ll be far more efficient offensively.

What’s Going To Happen

Don’t expect a whole lot of points, but that suits both teams just fine.

Ohio State will be too good at home, it’ll be far more effective from the field, and being just a little stronger from the free throw line will matter, too.

Indiana will get its chances, but it won’t be able to take full advantage of them.

Baylor vs Oklahoma State Game Preview

Why Baylor Will Win

The Bears are great at getting on the offensive boards. Usually teams get lots to rebounds on the offensive glass because they miss, but the Bears are doing just fine from the field, too.

They just have to be consistent.

Oklahoma State doesn’t do anything from the outside, and it’s having consistency problems inside, too.

It’s not getting to the free throw line on a regular basis, it doesn’t take or make enough threes. There are times when the Cowboys go through painful lulls when the shots just aren’t falling inside or out.

The Bears are still rebounding just fine – but not quite the same – without Jonathan Tchamwa Tchatchoua, the backcourt is able to force enough mistakes to matter, and the ball movement continues to be among the best in the Big 12.

Why Oklahoma State Will Win

The Cowboys were able to get Baylor on the road the first time around, and now they get the game in Stillwater.

It was a stunning end to a rough 2-6 run, hitting close to 45% from the field and doing a great job defensively in the 61-54 win. That wasn’t just a rare loss for Baylor, it was a rare road win for Oklahoma State.

The team is far better in Gallagher-Iba, but beyond that, it needs to simply be better from the field.

It’s been struggling way too much to get past 45% – forget about the shooting from three – but the defense has been solid, there are a whole lot of blocked shots and steals, and the team should be able to match what Baylor brings with its aggressive backcourt. And …

What’s Going To Happen

Baylor will run out of gas on the road.

It’ll be good at getting on the move and the defense will keep Oklahoma State from doing anything great, but again, this is a different Cowboy team when it’s not away from home.

It’s not going to be anything pretty, but at this point in a rough year, Oklahoma State will happily take the tough victory.

Now the Lions are playing with relative house money.

The team might be in the midst of a lost season, but it won two of its last three games and it keeps on pushing and trying. How is it all working? The passing game has been solid, the ground attack is producing, and the defense is coming up with stops.

It’s sort of crazy how that all tends to lead to wins.

This is hardly a rock-solid team, but as long as the offense keeps producing 20 points or more – not a given for large chunks of the season – there’s a chance.

Why Atlanta Will Win

Ryan should have a monster day.

The Lions might be playing better, but they got hit for over over 300 passing yards in a loss to Chicago – no one does that – and Minnesota’s Kirk Cousins and Arizona’s Kyler Murray at least threw for big yards in their respective defeats.

Atlanta should connect on a few big plays, but it’ll be the constant production on the midrange throws that should eat up the Detroit D.

Even with the injuries and the problems and the losing streak, the team is still playing well – the three losses over the last three games were by a grand total of five points. The running game is still working, the offense is scoring, and the defense hasn’t been all that bad.

This has just happened to be a tough run when the breaks and close games that went the Ravens’ way over the first half of the season are flipping to the other side.

The Bengals continue to be weird. The talent is there and the parts are in place to explode, but it’s just not happening with the offense falling flat over the last few games. But …

Why Cincinnati Will Win

Lamar Jackson isn’t right, Tyler Huntley has COVID, and Josh Johnson is getting the start. This obviously isn’t the same team when 8 isn’t on the field.

The Cincinnati defense continues to be great against the run – even after Denver had a strong day – and the offense has the explosive element to keep spreading the ball around with a passing game that can hit the deep ball against anyone.

The problem is with the team’s consistency – there isn’t any. However, that pendulum is due to swing back the other way.

As good as the Baltimore defense has been, it gave up close to 320 yards or more of total offense in six of the last eight games. In the first meeting the Bengals got a massive day from Joe Burrow with over 400 yards through the air.

Cincinnati continues to be fighting its way through the season, and Baltimore just can’t seem to catch a break lately. Starting Johnson isn’t helping the cause.

At home, the Bengal defense will come up with a strong day and Burrow will crank up the two big home runs needed to stay ahead. However, it’s a Baltimore game. It’s going to be close.
