5. Rapid-Fire First Reaction To Latest College Football Playoff Rankings

What’s with the refusal to like what Virginia Tech is doing? Yeah, it got wiped out by Duke 45-10 at the end of September, but that was before making a quarterback change – the committee is supposed to notice things like that – and before the team went on a run.

The Hokies have won six of their last seven game, with the one loss coming on the final drive against Notre Dame on the road. They whacked Wake Forest, and over the last two weeks beat Georgia Tech and Pitt by a combined score of 63-0. This team should be a whole lot higher than 24.

Virginia Tech being ranked makes things easier. Now we know that the Virginia-VT winner – and Coastal Division champ – will be the easy pick to go to the Orange Bowl if it loses to Clemson.

Ohio State moving up to No. 1 doesn’t matter all that much, unless it’s the committee’s way of providing a time to get used to the idea of LSU not being in the top spot. Why does this matter?

The College Football Playoff committee REALLY and truly just wants to get it right, and there isn’t some hidden agenda other than simply wanting to create the best four-team tournament possible. With that said, by moving up the Buckeyes now, it’s setting it up to avoid a possible LSU/Alabama rematch in the semifinal.

[lawrence-related id=502290]

Wisconsin at 12, Michigan at 13. Thank you, College Football Playoff committee, for being the only rankings to acknowledge the Badger blowout win over the Wolverines.

Nah, Oregon’s drop to 14 isn’t going to matter as much as you might think. Utah is going to have to dominate the Pac-12 Championship no matter what and get in as a 12-1 Power Five champ. After this weekend, Oregon will move up to around 11.

18 Memphis and 19 Cincinnati play each other, and they could play the week after in the American Athletic Conference championship. No. 20 Boise State has a better shot than you think of being the Group of Five champion going to the Cotton Bowl.

Clemson (11-0) vs. South Carolina (4-7) Game Preview

Why Clemson Will Win

No, really. Have you noticed what Trevor Lawrence has done over the last month?

No, you probably haven’t – most of America checked out on Clemson because of its not-its-fault awful schedule. The world is more interested in Burrow, and Jalen, and Fields, and Tua before he got hurt, but the 2021 No. 1 overall draft pick has gone off.

Over the last four games, Lawrence is hitting over 75% of his passes and averaging close to 12 yards per throw with 13 touchdown and no picks. He’s been flawless.

With three touchdown passes or more in each of his last six games, the Clemson offense has cranked up the production to a whole other level since the 21-20 scare over South Carolina.

The offense is humming in all phases, and that includes not screwing up.

South Carolina has to come up with takeaways to win, and that’s not happening. Clemson has turned it over just six times all year, and it’s third in the nation in turnover margin. The Gamecocks have given it up 23 times so far and is a near-lock to be a -2 in the turnover battle.

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why South Carolina Will Win

The Gamecock offense is just good enough to make this interesting.

It might not have the explosive element like Clemson brings, but it’s been balanced enough at times to at least stay in games against some of the better teams on the slate.

For this to work, USC has to keep Lawrence and company on the sidelines, and that comes from the offense doing its part, and it needs the defensive line to get into the backfield on a regular basis.

Tackles for loss don’t guarantee anything for the Gamecocks – the defensive line did a strong job in losses to Appalachian State and Missouri – but they’re a must to at least have a shot.

The O is great on third downs, its passing game is putting up 200 yards on a consistent basis, and the attack is grinding out the clock just enough to run 80+ plays a game on a regular basis over the last month.

What’s Going To Happen

It’s South Carolina’s bowl game, and its season.

The last win in the series came back in 2013 – handing Clemson one of its two losses on the season – and this time around, a win would be devastating.

There’s an outside chance Clemson can lose this, obliterate Virginia or Virginia Tech from the Coastal Division in the ACC Championship, and still get into the College Football Playoff if the committee goes with the four-best-team belief, but … no.

With the weak all-around schedule, it would be a nearly-impossible sell.

There won’t be any worries about that.

South Carolina’s defense will keep this from getting out of hand early, and the slow-and-go style will shorten the game, but Clemson will get on a roll late in the first half, and it won’t stop.

Lawrence and the passing game will hit two big home runs to open up a tight game, and South Carolina won’t have the ability to respond.

Ole Miss (4-7) vs. Mississippi State (5-6) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

Why Ole Miss Will Win

The running game has become unstoppable.

It was working just fine here and there – hitting Vanderbilt for over 400 yards, and coming up with over 200 on a regular basis – and it ripped through New Mexico State for 447 yards a few weeks ago. That was hardly a shocker, and then …

44 carries, 402 yards, four scores against LSU.

Ole Miss lost, but offensive coordinator Rich Rodriguez’s attack is ripping off yards in chunks, starting with freshman QB John Rhys Plumlee taking over and making the offense his, highlighted by his 212-yard day against LSU.

Unlike LSU, Mississippi State doesn’t have the offense to keep up the pace if this gets into any sort of a shootout.

The Bulldog run defense hasn’t been bad, but it’s not getting behind the line enough to stop the Rebel O before it gets started.

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Mississippi State Will Win

Mississippi State isn’t as dynamic at running the ball as Ole Miss is, but it’s been almost as effective lately, and it’s been more deliberate doing it.

The Rebels might be fantastic when they get into their groove, but they don’t do anything to control the clock. Mississippi State might not have the most dynamic of offenses, but Kylin Hill and the ground attack can pound out yards, too, and they dictate the tempo.

The Bulldogs are running well lately, too. coming up with over 800 yards against Abilene Christian and Arkansas, averaging over five yards per pop against Alabama and hammering Texas A&M for 239 yards.

The quarterback rushing production isn’t the same as what Ole Miss is getting from Plumlee, but Tommy Stevens have been ripping off yards in chunks over his last few games, and Hill has hit the 150-yard mark in three of his last four games.

What’s Going To Happen

Both teams have something massive to play for.

Mississippi State becomes bowl eligible with a win, and even with a loss, it still has hope, just like Ole Miss does if it gets to 5-7 thanks to the potential of the APR provision.

If there aren’t enough bowl eligible teams, it’ll come down to the Academic Progress Rates of the 5-7 teams, and there’s a very, very, very distant chance that both the Rebels and Bulldogs can slip in.

Ole Miss is going to make it interesting, keeping its hot ground game going in what should be a bit of a firefight. The Rebels are a bit better against the run than Mississippi State is.

Missouri (5-6) vs. Arkansas (2-9) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

Why Missouri Will Win

This is now the Tigers’ bowl game.

There was hope for the NCAA to reverse its ridiculous decision to punish Missouri for self-reported and fixed transgressions, but no … the bowl ban this season holds.

Little Rock will have to serve as the place to have some fun playing a little more football.

Arkansas shouldn’t be anything more than a light scrimmage with an offense that can’t move the ball, a defense that can’t stop anyone on third downs, and hurt mostly be a painfully inefficient and ineffective passing game that can’t keep the pace with anyone.

Mizzou might be having a whole ton of problems on its own, but the defense is playing well. The secondary will clamp down, it won’t allow any long marches, and the run D is holding everyone to around 130 yards per game.

However …

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Arkansas Will Win

Didn’t you used to be the Missouri offense?

Kelly Bryant hasn’t been the same over the second half of the season after getting banged up a bit, and the passing game has stalled over the last five games.

How bad have things gotten?

Missouri only went under the 400 total yardage mark once over the first half of the season, and then everything went haywire in the strange loss to Vanderbilt. Ever since then, the O hasn’t managed 300 yards.

The passing game has been bad, the ground attack worse – the Tigers haven’t rushed for 100 yards in three straight games – and there’s nothing that’s consistently working well.

The Arkansas defense should finally get a bit of a break, but …

What’s Going To Happen

Missouri’s running game is about to get healthy.

Everyone from WKU to Kentucky to Auburn to Colorado State has been able to rush for 200 yards, and the Tigers aren’t about to get too complicated about its attack. It’s going to line up, blast away, and let the defense take care of the rest.

However, Mizzou is 0-4 on the road this year, and it’s not above clunking against a bad team – witness the 21-14 loss to Vandy.

Arkansas will keep this close, but it won’t be able to come through late.

College Football Free Predictions, Previews Winners & Whiners: Week 14

[jwplayer PkCtjTd4-boEY74VG]

NCAAF Free Predictions

Presented by Winners and Whiners in partnership with CFN

The final full week of college football is here. Last week, there was one major upset and it saw No. 6 Oregon loss at unranked Arizona State, 31-28. With rivalry week, there are some stinkers (Georgia/Georgia Tech) and then there is No. 2 Ohio State at No. 13 Michigan; No. 5 Alabama at No. 15 Auburn; and No. 9 Oklahoma at No. 21 Oklahoma State.

(note: These picks were made by our Editor and are subject to change. Check out WinnersandWhiners.com for a full analysis and update on each matchup)

* It’s expected to be cold and rainy in Ann Arbor. That might be a good things for the Wolverines to slow down that Ohio State offense. Michigan hasn’t beaten Ohio State since 2011. OSU turned the ball over three times last week. This could be another sloppy affair and the Wolverines are on a roll. Take the Wolverines to cover at home.

*Alabama quarterback Mac Jones gets his first big test against Auburn on Saturday. Auburn has three pretty tight losses. Their offense struggles moving the ball agaisnt good defenses. Their defense has been very good, holding a great LSU offense to just 23 points on the road. Alabama will miss Tua Tagovailoa in this one. Taking Auburn here and the hook.

*Oklahoma loves getting behind and coming back to win. Last week, they finally got a big lead but nearly blew it late as Jalen Hurts had an awful passing game, but did run for 173 yards and two score to help the Sooners beat TCU by four. Oklahoma State has won four straight after losing at home to Baylor, 45-27. The Sooners still have a slight shot to make the CFP but they need help. This will be another shootout but the Cowboys cover at home.

NFL Free Predictions, Previews from Winners & Whiners: Week 13

The NFL free previews and predictions for Week 13 from Winners & Whiners

NFL Football Free Predictions

Presented by Winners and Whiners in partnership with CFN!

In the NFL, we’re headed to Week 13 after a week that saw no major upsets, though a few surprises with San Francisco dismantling Green Bay on Sunday night, while the Ravens crushed the Rams on Monday night. Those two teams meet on Sunday from Baltimore.. In other action on Sunday, Tennessee visits Indianapolis, while New England meets Houston on the road.

(note: These picks were made by our Editor and are subject to change. Check out WinnersandWhiners.com for a full analysis and update on each matchup)

*Can anybody stop Baltimore’s offense? Once again, weather might play a factor and that can help slow down the Ravens offense. The Niners have a great defense, but they are also going up against a tough D on the road. They struggled against Russell Wilson and Kyler Murray. Both mobile quarterbacks who can run. Lamar Jackson is in a different stratosphere as a runn. Take the Ravens to continue to roll at home.

*Tennessee and Indianapolis are both 6-5 in the AFC, so this one is big. The Colts won the first meeting on the road in Sept. 15, 19-17. But that was before Ryan Tannehill took over at quarterback for Marcus Mariota. The Colts have been struggling lately, losing three of their last four games. The Colts are strong against the run, which is a must against Derrick Henry. But I’m going with the Titans because I don’t trust Adam Vinatieri in what should be a very close game and Tannehill has taken over this team. Take the points on the road.

*Another Sunday and the Patriots get another big test. After losing at Baltimore by 17, they found a way to put Philadelphia on the road and Dallas at home despite scoring a combined 30 points. This one is going to be another difficult road game, but unlike Philadelphia, the Texans actually have competent receivers and a decent running game. They also have Deshaun Watson an a few days of extra rest. Take the Texans at home.

Maryland (3-8) vs. Michigan State (5-6) Game Preview

Why Maryland Will Win

Michigan State’s offense isn’t working.

It’s having a huge problem on third downs, the rushing attack isn’t going anywhere, and there are way too many turnovers.

Finally, the woeful Maryland run defense might get a break.

The MSU ground game rumbled for 275 yards on Illinois, and that’s been about it. It failed to hit the 90-yard mark in four of five games before playing Rutgers, and even then the offensive line couldn’t generate a push against the bad, bad defense.

How ugly is this? MSU has failed to average more than four yards per carry eight times this year including in five of the last six games.

However …

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Michigan State Will Win

Michigan State, run the (bleep)ing ball this week.

The Spartans have rushed for over 200 yards twice, and they ripped apart Western Michigan and Illinois in the only two games they came up with more than one touchdown run – six of the ten scores came in those two games.

Maryland has allowed 300 yards or more in three of the last four games, but that gets forgotten about thanks to an offense that hasn’t scored more than 14 points in five of the last six games.

The Terp offense is not only awful, but it’s awful in a hurry. It doesn’t allow America a whole lot of time to watch the sad.

MSU is going to be able to finally run, it’s going to control the clock for close to 40 minutes, and it’s not going to have to worry a lick about a Terp passing game that hasn’t hit 50% of its passes in the last four games and hit a new low – 7-of-21 for 57 yards – in the 54-7 loss to Nebraska.

What’s Going To Happen

Michigan State needs to win this to get bowl eligible. As rough as the second half of the season has been, this week the Spartans get a chance to go off on both sides of the ball.

The defense will rise up and rock a Terp offense that’s really, really, really not working, and the offense will finally be able to run the ball well enough to dominate.

Penn State (9-2) vs. Rutgers (2-9) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

Why Rutgers Will Win

It’s not like the Penn State offense has a ton of scoring pop.

The running game hasn’t hit the 200-yard mark since the opener against Idaho, the passing attack hasn’t connected on 60% of its throws in the last six games, and overall, this O isn’t the type to come out of the tunnel and get up 24-0.

Rutgers isn’t able to move the chains, and it isn’t doing a whole lot of anything right, but at least it does it slow and keeps the clock moving. More than anything else, the team has to hope that Penn State is down after its loss to Ohio State, and this is the game to try airing it out on a secondary that’s being picked apart lately.

Minnesota’s Tanner Morgan hit 90% of his passes, Indiana’s Peyton Ramsey hit 76% of his throws for 371 yards, and Justin Fields – despite being a bit banged up – hit 16-of-22 passes with two scores and several big plays.

However …

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Penn State Will Win

Rutgers just doesn’t have any offense.

It scored 21 points on the Buckeyes – but most of that was when the game was well out of reach and OSU was moved on to the Penn State game – but this O isn’t doing much of anything right.

It’s not moving the chains, coming up with third down throws, and worst of all, the offensive line gives up a ton of plays behind the line.

Rutgers, meet Yetur Gross-Matos, Micah Parsons, and a defensive front that’s destined to come up with at least ten tackles for loss.

Just assume that Rutgers will next well under 100 rushing yards – more like under 50 – and the passing game that’s failed to hit 90 yards in four of its last six games isn’t about to go off now.

What’s Going To Happen

Penn State still has to care and still has to try.

The Rose Bowl might be out of the equation, but sitting a 12 in the CFP rankings, there’s an outside shot a 10-2 Nittany Lion team can move up into the top ten and be in the mix for a New Year’s Six bowl game.

The Nittany Lions have won 12 in a row going back to 1988, and has won 27 of the last 28 in the series going back to the 26-3 Rutgers win … in 1918.

Penn State will call off the dogs in the fourth quarter after a totally dominant defensive performance.
