Brother of Washington Football Team’s Montez Sweat fatally shot

The brother of Washington Football Team defensive lineman Montez Sweat was fatally shot

Tragedy has struck the Washington Football Team again.

The brother of defensive lineman Montez Sweat was shot and killed Tuesday in Henrico County, Virginia.

The incident comes a week after a passenger in a car driven by DB and special teams player Deshazor Everett died in an accident.

Anthony R. Sweat, 27, died after being hit during a shooting incident at an apartment complex.

Per WTVR.com:

A man said he witnessed at least two men fleeing the scene as he and an off-duty VCU Police officer who was in the area ran toward a man shot multiple times in the back grass yard of a West End apartment home

“He started CPR on him,” the man remembered. “And I just kind of gripped his hand and held onto him, but it was kind of already too late.”

Coach Ron Rivera said the team was there for Montez Sweat.

“It is rough and our thoughts and prayers are with the families. But here in the facility we try to make sure that players understand that we are here for them,” Rivera said. “We do have a team sports psychologist – and she’s available.”

In the Everett incident, Olivia S. Peters, 29, of Las Vegas died after the car the DB was driving left a roadway and struck several trees. That took place in Loudon County. Everett was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

Washington defensive linemen Jonathan Allen and Daron Payne fight on sidelines

An ugly game got uglier on the Washington Football Team sidelines

The game and season have turned ugly for the Washington Football Team.

On the field, too.

During Sunday’s game with the Dallas Cowboys a pair of WFT defensive linemen Jonathan  Allen and Daron Payne forgot ’tis the season to exchange gifts and not fists.

They got into it on the heated benches the players were sitting on in a disastrous moment on national television.

The “T” shouldn’t stand for Team. It better represents Turmoil.

Allen and Payne have been together a long time. They were teammates at Alabama in 2015 and ’16.

The game was ugly, too, as Washington trailed 42-7 at halftime.

Washington Football Team’s Deshazor Everett driver in fatal crash

A car driven by Washington Football Team DB Deshazor Everett was in an accident and a female passenger has died

Washington Football Team safety and special-teams player Deshazor Everett was the driver in a fatal, one-car crash that saw a passenger lose her life when the car hit a number of trees Thursday night.

The passenger Olivia S. Peters, 29, was pronounced dead at StoneSprings Hospital.

Everett was taken to a local hospital, where he remained Friday morning. His injuries are reportedly serious but not life-threatening.

The Loudon County Sheriff issued a news release:

The driver of a 2010 Nissan GT-R was traveling north on Gum Spring Road near Ticonderoga Road when around 9:15 p.m. the vehicle left the right side of the roadway, struck several trees, and rolled over.

The passenger, Olivia S. Peters, 29, of Las Vegas, Nevada was taken to StoneSprings Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries.

The driver was taken to Reston Hospital Center where he is being treated for serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

The team released a statement:

Everett played college football at Texas A&M and has been with the WFT since 2015. He is a special-teams standout.

Eagles keep Gilbert family winless in 6 starts as NFL quarterbacks

Gale and Garrett Gilbert have yet to win a game as an NFL starting quarterback

The Philadelphia Eagles defeated the Washington Football Team on Tuesday, 27-17, and in doing so kept the Gilbert family on the schneid as NFL starting quarterbacks.

Garrett Gilbert was pressed into duty when COVID-19 knocked out the first two quarterbacks for the NFC East clash.

The loss was Gilbert’s second as a starter. He came up short in his first chance last year with the Dallas Cowboys.

Garrett Gilbert’s father, Gale, played on and off in the NFL from 1985-95. He made four starts and lost them all. Two came with the Seattle Seahawks in 1986 and the other two took place in 1994 and ’96 with the San Diego Chargers.

So, Garrett and Gale Gilbert are a combined 0-6 as starting quarterbacks in the NFL.

Gale Gilbert is the only player in NFL history to be a member of five straight Super Bowl teams; four with the Bills (XXV–XXVIII) and one with the Chargers (XXIX). All five teams lost.

Has Taylor Heinicke done enough to be Washington’s quarterback of the future?

Touchdown Wire’s Laurie Fitzpatrick breaks down the film to analyze the skill set of Washington QB Taylor Heinicke.

The Washington Football Team is in an uncertain spot when it comes to their quarterback of the future.

Taylor Heinicke has shown some resilience this season. After taking over for the injured Ryan Fitzpatrick in a season-opening loss to the Chargers, Heinicke rallied a fourth-quarter comeback against the Giants. After a 2-2 start, Washington endured a four-game losing streak. Then, after the bye week, Washington went on a four-game winning streak.

It’s been an interesting but bumpy ride with Heinicke under center, and last week’s loss against the Dallas Cowboys may have confirmed one thing; it’s unlikely that he’s the future of the franchise, but he can certainly help his offense win and make a playoff run when his team is healthy.

When we go to the tape, Heinicke has showed positives throughout the season, but also some concerns.

After the bye week, Heinicke was looking to get his team back on track after four consecutive losses. Washington traveled to Tampa Bay to take on the Buccaneers, who were already 6-3 on the season, and Washington hadn’t beaten a team that was above .500 yet.

Washington’s defense held the Bucs to only 14 points and allowed only four third-down conversions, but what Heinicke did in the passing game was impressive as well. He finished 26 for 32 and had 256 yards through the air with one touchdown and a 110.4 quarterback rating.

Heinicke attacked the Buccaneers’ secondary and tore through their defense using play-action and pre-snap motion.

Heinicke has a receiver concept on the right side of the field with three defenders deep with man-match coverage underneath. The wide-out (top of clip) ran his cornerback out of the play, and this left the tight end one-on-one.

A few weeks later against the Los Angeles Raiders, another motion from the tight end identified zone coverage underneath with a safety over the top. With a concept route, post/corner, Heinicke only had to throw in the gap within the zone — which he did with ease.

When we go back to the Buccaneers game, we see that common theme between the motion and concepts which exploited one side of the defense. These throws get harder against Cover-3, as those gaps in the zones get smaller.

However, Heinicke has shown an ability to find openings in Cover-3 man under, Cover-1 zone under and Cover-3 zone under.

On the play below, Heinicke used motion to identify zone coverage. The play-action holds the safety, Jordan Whitehead, near the line of scrimmage, which leaves a little bit of space between the first and second level of the defense; Heinicke was lucky this one wasn’t picked off.

Per Sports Info Solutions, Heinicke with play-action this season is 106 of 146 for 1,188 yards, eight touchdowns, and no interceptions. Without play-action, it’s a different story, as he had completed 172 of 272 passesfor 1.743 yards, 11 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions.

When we move to last week’s game against the Cowboys, Dallas’ defense had seen Heinicke’s success against zone and play action, so they threw in some disguises post-snap to force Heinicke to go through all of his reads.

On this play, the linebacker dropped deep into coverage, taking away Heinicke’s initial reads in the middle of the field.

Instead of just remaining patient and throwing the crosser, as he wasn’t being pressured, Heinicke tried to check down, then scrambled when he realizes his back was covered as well.

When we go back to Week 5 against the Saints, New Orleans’ defense used that same tactic.

Play-action gave Heinicke time to read linebacker Demario Davis, but when Davis dropped back to pick up the receiver, who is attempting to split the deep safety, Heinicke needed to move to the next read. It was too late, and Heinicke took a sack. Dallas used this same tactic last week.

When Heinicke saw a dropping linebacker paired with a heavy pass rush, instead of settling for the shallow completion, he forced it deep.

Washington had to basically abandon play-action when they faced the Cowboys because of linebacker Micah Parsons’ 4.3 speed.

Not having the advantages of play-action really hindered Heinicke’s performance. He wasn’t settling for the shallow passes, continued to throw into triple coverage in the middle of the field. Opponents won’t continue to leave their corners on an island, and when they do, they will make sure they blitz to force him into bad decisions.

Heinicke is a capable system quarterback who can thrive in situations where his defense and rushing attack can help him win games. But unless he’s in a heavily-schemed offense, he’s unlikely to beat a team that he shouldn’t beat.

Just as long as Heinicke doesn’t turn the ball over, he puts the Washington Football Team in a decent position for playoffs; as they play only one team that is above .500 for the remainder of the season.

Beyond this season, Washington will have an interesting decision to make. Do they want to develop Taylor Heinicke as their quarterback of the future, or do they attempt to find a quarterback who is more scheme-transcendent?

Washington State vs Washington Game Preview

Why Washington State Will Win

So how has this gone so well under interim head coach Jake Dickert? The offense has been able to keep the passing game going.

The rushing attack has been a bit hit-or-miss, but the Cougars are good for 230 yards or more just about every time out, and the blanks get filled in from there.

It’s a sharp team that leads the Pac-12 in takeaways, doesn’t get hit with a whole slew of penalties, and the turnovers have been relatively spread out. After giving the ball away 12 times in the first six games, there have been five turnovers in the last six games, and three of them came against Oregon.

On the other side, the Washington running game has been a mess – under 100 yards in eight of the 11 games – the passing attack has been painfully inconsistent, and …

Why Washington Will Win

This defense still works against the passing teams.

It might be a lost year with a lost head coach and with all the hopes of a Pac-12 title run gone from the word go – or, at least, with the Montana loss showing where things were heading.

But the D has held up against the bombers – Washington is No. 1 in the nation in pass defense. Granted, the stats are skewed because everyone has so much fun with the ground attack, but Washington State obviously wants to throw, and that’s not going to be easy against a secondary that really is just that good.

This is it. This is the team’s one shot to make something big happen by screwing up the rival’s season because …

What’s Going To Happen

Okay, here’s the Pac-12 North situation. If Oregon beats Oregon State on Saturday it doesn’t matter what happens in this. However, if Washington State wins the Apple Cup over Washington, and Oregon State beats Oregon, the Cougars are going.

Oregon State needs Washington to win.

That’s not going to happen.

Washington just doesn’t run well enough – even though it’ll give it a go against the mediocre Wazzu run D – and the passing game that was so good in Colorado won’t be enough to come through.

It’ll be a close, tight showdown in the rivalry atmosphere, but Washington State’s passing consistency will be just enough to keep things moving.

Washington vs Colorado Game Preview

Why Washington Will Win

The team did what it could in a tough battle with Arizona State.

With head coach Jimmy Lake sacked, and with the offense struggling in the bad weather, the Huskies fought in a 35-30 loss after fighting in a 26-16 loss to Oregon.

There’s still something to play for. Win this, beat Washington State in the Apple Cup, go for a nice vacation and a bowl game.

To get there, it starts with a defense that’s been able to keep playing well through the lost season.

The rough weather over the last few weeks had something to do with the overall stats, but the secondary has been good, the D is second in the Pac-12 in fewest yards allowed, and now it gets a Colorado offense that’s just starting to produce a bit. It’s happening because …

Why Colorado Will Win

The Buffs are starting to run the ball better.

They powered on Oregon State for 222 yards in a stunning win, and got just enough production against UCLA to make the game more than a scrimmage. Now the O line has to power its way through a Washington defensive front that’s been way too leaky.

It stuffed Stanford’s ground game – who doesn’t? – but got run over by Oregon and Arizona State over the last few weeks.

Again, overall the UW defense has been okay, but giving up over 200 rushing yards in five of the last six games wasn’t what this group was supposed to do.

The Husky secondary has been strong, but Colorado doesn’t pass well anyway.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 11

What’s Going To Happen

Colorado is finally back home.

It was on a rough run of three road games in four weeks, but the one home game was the win over Oregon State.

Washington is still pushing and it’s still getting just enough production in key areas to hold out hope of winning the last two games to get bowling, but the Buffs will take the home finale before going off to Utah.
