The Washington Huskies managed to even their season series with the No. 16 Arizona Wildcats on Saturday, as coach Jason Kelly’s team pulled off a 4-3 upset inside Husky Ballpark on Saturday afternoon.

First baseman Jeter Ybarra opened the scoring with an RBI single in the first inning, but Arizona’s third baseman Maddox Mihalakis answered with a run-scoring single of his own in the top of the second inning as part of a perfect day where he reached base four times, going 3 for 3 with a walk.

Arizona took a 3-1 lead in the fourth inning but the Huskies answered back with two runs of their own to tie the game thanks to an error by Mihalakis which extended the frame. Second baseman Aiva Arquette’s RBI single knotted the game at 3-3 before shortstop Cam Clayton’s RBI double put the Huskies ahead for good in the fifth.

Calvin Kirchoff earned the win for the Huskies, his third of the season, working 5 2/3 innings allowing 7 hits, 3 earned runs, and 2 walks while striking out 5 batters. The win pushes the Huskies up to 15-20-1 on the season and 7-13 against Pac-12 opponents, while the Wildcats fell to 26-15 and 14-6 against conference foes this season. The two teams will begin the rubber match of their three-game series on Sunday afternoon at 1:05.

Washington softball evens series with No. 7 Stanford

The Washington Huskies softball team earned a 3-1 victory over the Stanford Cardinal.

After being stifled by the No. 7 Stanford Cardinal and pitcher NiJaree Canady on Friday night, the No. 8 Washington Huskies rebounded for a 3-1 victory on Saturday.

The Huskies opened the scoring thanks to shortstop Rylee Holtorf, who slapped a two-run single into left field with the bases loaded in the second inning.

The only other runs in the game came in the sixth inning when Stanford outfielder Kyra Chan cut Washington’s lead in half with an RBI single, but right fielder Alana Johnson answered in the bottom of the frame with her team-leading twelfth home run of the season to give the Huskies a two-run advantage.

Washington baseball drops opener against No. 16 Arizona 3-2

The Washington Huskies hung with the No. 16 Arizona Wildcats for 7 innings, but couldn’t put together a late rally.

The Washington Huskies were looking for the same magic that they were able to channel in February, when coach Jason Kelly’s team stormed into Austin, Texas, to take two of three games from the Texas Longhorns, against the No. 16 Arizona Wildcats. However, Arizona held on for a 3-2 victory thanks to an eighth-inning surge.

Starter Jared Engman did everything he could through 6 2/3 innings to try and pull off the upset, allowing 3 hits, 4 walks, and 2 earned runs. He let up both runs in the seventh inning, with catcher Adonys Guzman launching a solo home run and right fielder Emilio Corona scoring on a passed ball.

Second baseman Aiva Arquette wouldn’t let the Huskies go away quietly, tying the game with his tenth home run of the season, a two-run blast to tie the game. Arquette went 3 for 5 on the day and plated catcher Colin Blanchard, who recorded 2 hits and a walk in his 3 at bats.

Shortstop Mason White broke the tie with an RBI single in the eighth inning off Gianluca Shinn to put the Wildcats ahead for good.

Isaac Yeager took the loss for the Huskies after working 1/3 of an inning, allowing 2 hits and 1 earned run, and Kyler Heyne garnered his second win of the year, letting up just 1 hit over 1 2/3 scoreless innings.

With the loss, the Huskies fall to 14-20-1 on the season and 6-13 in Pac-12 play, while the Wildcats improved to 26-14 overall and 14-5 against conference opponents. The two teams will meet for the second installment of their three-game series on Saturday afternoon at 2:05.

Stanford tops Washington in pitcher’s duel to open series

The Washington Huskies couldn’t solve NiJaree Canady on Friday night, dropping the first of a three-game series with Stanford.

The Washington Huskies hold the No. 12 batting average in the nation and have consistently displayed one of the country’s best offenses all season long, but facing Stanford’s NiJaree Canady proved to be a different challenge.

Canady, who leads the country with her .51 ERA stifled Washington’s bats on Friday, holding coach Heather Tarr’s team to just 4 hits as the No. 7 Cardinal took the opening game of the series 3-1 from the No. 8 Huskies.

Stanford jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning by way of an RBI groundout from catcher Aly Kaneshiro and an RBI double from left fielder Kyra Chan. Infielder Giselle Alvarez answered with a solo home run in the sixth inning to cut the lead in half, but a solo shot from the Cardinal’s Jade Berry in the final frame put the game out of reach.

Canady tossed a complete game, allowing just 4 hits, 1 walk, and 1 earned run while striking out 11 batters to improve her record to 16-4 on the season. Ruby Meylan went toe-to-toe with her, also working all 7 innings, allowing 3 hits, 2 walks, and 3 runs (1 earned) with 8 strikeouts.

The loss pushes the Huskies to 30-9 on the season and 12-7 against Pac-12 opponents, while the Cardinal improved to 38-10 and 14-5 against conference opponents. The two top-ranked teams in the conference will meet for the second installment of their three-game set on Saturday at 3:00.

Washington takes another Sunday stumble, falling 4-3 at Cal

The Washington Huskies secured a series victory over the Cal Golden Bears, but couldn’t complete a sweep on Sunday.

The No. 8 Washington Huskies’ struggles in series finales continued in the Bay Area on Sunday afternoon, losing to the No. 20 California Golden Bears 4-3. The loss pushed coach Heather Tarr’s team to just 1-5 in the final game of three-game sets and 0-5 on Sundays in Pac-12 play.

Even though graduate student Brooke Nelson hit her seventh home run in as many games, Washington’s pitching staff didn’t have an answer for Cal’s Tianna Bell.

Bell went 3 for 4 on Sunday, including a home run off Nelson in the bottom of the first inning and a walk-off RBI single off Ruby Meylan in the seventh inning.

Meylan took the loss on the day, falling to 9-5 on the season after pitching the final 3 2/3 innings, allowing 2 hits and 1 earned run while walking 2 batters and striking out 2.

The Washington Huskies almost let their lead slip away, but earned a 13-8 victory over Utah thanks to a five-run ninth inning.

The Washington Huskies appeared to be in line to cruise to an easy victory over the Utah Utes on Saturday afternoon at Smith’s Ballpark. Coach Jason Kelly’s team jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning and extended it to 7-0 by the sixth.

However, the Utes wouldn’t go quietly and posted 7 runs in the eighth inning to knot the game at 8-8, highlighted by a three-run home run by shortstop Core Jackson, and an error from center fielder Cooper Whitton.

Washington baseball drops series opener at Utah 8-6

The Washington Huskies couldn’t mount a late-inning comeback against the Utah Utes on Friday morning.

Coach Jason Kelly’s team saw its lead evaporate by the end of the second inning as the Utah Utes cruised to an 8-6 victory.

Shortstop Core Jackson had a stellar day for the Utes, going 3 for 5 with 3 doubles, 3 runs batted in, and a run scored.
