Falcons vs Commanders will feature NFL rookie history

Falcons vs Commanders will feature NFL rookie history with first-round rookie QBs starting against one another

When the Atlanta Falcons and Washington Commanders take to the field on Sunday night in Week 17, they will make some surprising NFL history. The game in Washington will feature two first-round rookie quarterbacks squaring off.

Somewhat incredibly, the matchup between Atlanta’s Michael Penix and Washington’s Jayden Daniels will mark the first time in NFL history that two first-round rookies start in the same game. NBS Sports pointed out the unlikely fact with a great graphic on social media to help promote the game on the network.

There have been a couple of instances where two first-round rookies have gone against one another in the same game, most recently Baker Mayfield vs. Sam Darnold back in 2018. In that game, Darnold started for the New York Jets but Baker Mayfield came off the bench to replace Tyrod Taylor for Cleveland.

Jayden Daniels makes statement for the Commanders as he nears notable record

Jayden Daniels’ standout rookie season continues as he nears RGIII’s rookie rushing record.

Jayden Daniels has been one of the most successful rookies in the NFL after he was selected by the Washington Commanders with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

He shined in a huge way during Sunday’s 36-33 win over the Philadelphia Eagles as he completed 24 of his 39 passing attempts for 258 yards with five touchdowns and two interceptions.

He also was the Commanders’ leading rusher for the game, carrying the ball nine times for 81 yards. He came in the clutch when it mattered the most, delivering a nine-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Jamison Crowder in the last six seconds of the game to deliver the Commanders to victory.

In addition to the other milestones he has accomplished, Daniels is also hovering over Robert Griffin IIII’s record for most rushing yards in a single season by a rookie quarterback.

RGIII finished out the 2012 season with 815 yards, which for now, is still the most a first-year NFL quarterback has ever accomplished. Coincidentally, the team he did that for was Washington.

Daniels is now threatening with a total of 737 rushing yards this season as he surpassed both Cam Newton and Lamar Jackson in that category to move to the No. 2 spot there.

Several, including former NFL standout Vernon Davis, see Daniels as a potential measuring stick for other quarterbacks in the future and as a player who could be recognized as an NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year.

“He’s special. The crazy part is, he’s just getting started,” Davis said in an interview with RG. “Anytime you make the jump from college to the professional level, you can come in and play well, but it takes one or two years. It takes after that first year and maybe that second year to really get acclimated and start believing who you’re meant to be.”

2024 has been something for Daniels, but this seems to only be the tip of the iceberg.

“This year’s special for him, but in the years to come, we’re going to see a lot of Jayden Daniels.”

Jayden Daniels duels evenly with MVP Lamar Jackson in loss to Ravens

Commanders rookie QB Jayden Daniels duels evenly with MVP Lamar Jackson in Week 6 loss to Ravens

One of the most hyped up games of the season fully lived up to the expectations in big ways thanks in part to the two quarterbacks that were on showcase in this week 6 tilt between the Baltimore Ravens and Washington Commanders. It was impressive to see rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels go blow for blow with the two time MVP Lamar Jackson and display what two elite quarterbacks can do on the same field.

At times, it was hard to tell which quarterback was the rookie, as both teams’ offenses looked absolutely spectacular behind their super-talented signal callers. Daniels finished the afternoon with 24 of 35 completions for 269 yards and 2 passing touchdowns. Daniels also punctuated the day with 22 yards on the ground on 6 carries to lead the team in rushing against a brutally tough run defense.

After being down 27-13 late in the fourth quarterback, Daniels almost completed an impressive comeback, finishing the game within one score at 30-23 when the clocks struck zero. Daniels is proving time and time again to be a true rookie phenom and has already established himself as one of the league’s premiere quarterbacks in just 6 starts. Expect to see Daniels guide this team to the playoffs and defy all expectations all season long with the way that he is playing.

Rookie QB Jayden Daniels wins NFC Offensive Player of the Week

Commanders rookie QB Jayden Daniels wins NFC Offensive Player of the Week, not limited to rookies!

Commanders rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels is off to a sizzling start. The No. 2 overall pick and reigning Heisman Trophy winner led Washington to a primetime victory over the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 3.

For his precise, dynamic effort, Daniels earned the NFC Offensive Player of the Week honors. Not rookie of the week, but overall player. And Daniels definitely earned it.

The rookie from LSU completed 21 of his 23 passes, netting 254 yards and two touchdowns. Daniels also led the Commanders in rushing with 39 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries. Washington did not punt once in the Monday Night Football win.

Washington Commanders name Jayden Daniels as Week 1 starter

Washington Commanders name No. 2 overall pick Jayden Daniels as their Week 1 starting quarterback

There was little doubt heading into the preseason that the Washington Commander’s second overall pick in Jayden Daniels would eventually take over the reigns as the starter. Entering the third and final week of the preseason the Commanders coaching staff went ahead and made that assumption official as Daniels was named the starter for week one of the regular season.

The former Heisman winner has been impressive in every part of the process since being drafted. From his impressive training camp, to showing elite tools in his preseason appearances, it has been clear early on that Daniels is the best quarterback on Washington’s roster. Daniels beat out established veteran Marcus Mariota in what was ultimately more of a hypothetical quarterback battle than anything else.

Daniels will have the chance to dazzle early and have plenty of confidence doing so given how much this Washington coaching staff has praised him. We should see plenty of success from this young quarterback who looks to bring over his immense success from LSU to the NFL level, and Daniels should be one of the betting favorites to be the offensive rookie of the year.

Jayden Daniels impresses in preseason debut with Commanders

No. 2 overall pick Jayden Daniels impresses in preseason debut with Commanders

The reigning Heisman Trophy winner was thrust into action as a starter in his first preseason game, and it was bombs away immediately for Jayden Daniels in his debut with the Commanders.

As was the case for Daniels in his Heisman-winning season, his first completion was an absolute dime of a deep ball down the right side of the field to Dyami Brown for a 42-yard pickup on third down. Daniels capped off the drive with a walk-in touchdown. Daniels looked calm, cool, and collected with every snap and looked like a veteran quarterback with plenty of high-level upside waiting to be unlocked.

This was promising to see for every Commander fan, and a nice change of pace from the quarterback play that the team has fielded for the last decade. Of course, this is only preseason, so expectations must be tempered, but it looked like Daniels very well could be the real deal and an immediate threat at the next level.

The Commanders are doing something very unusual with their QB prospect visits

New Commanders GM Adam Peters is breaking the mold of pre-draft visits for quarterback prospects

New Washington Commanders general manager Adam Peters is bringing some serious change to the organization. One of his new ways of getting ready for the NFL draft is an innovate approach.

Well, that’s one word for it, anyway. Others might include weird, intriguing, bizarre, awkward, ridiculous, brilliant, unconventional or insane.

Peters and the Commanders hold the No. 2 pick in the 2024 NFL draft and are almost certain to select a quarterback with the pick. But which quarterback?

[gambcom-standard rankid=”5375″ ]

In a (choose your favorite adjective from above) move, the Commanders are hosting all of the candidates together for one giant visit. Jayden Daniels, Drake Maye, J.J. McCarthy and Michael Penix will all be in Washington and meeting with Commanders’ decision-makers at the same time. From Albert Breer,

The concept of having multiple players in for a pre-draft visit together isn’t terribly uncommon; Peters’ old organization, the San Francisco 49ers, has done it before. But the prominence of the quarterbacks and high stakes of the No. 2 pick makes hosting all of them at the same time a bold choice.
