Why Wake Forest Will Win

The Demon Deacons very, very, very, very, very quietly are on a four-game winning streak after starting the season with a loss to Clemson – it played okay in the opener – and in a shootout road loss to NC State.

The offense is okay, the defense has been good enough, and more than anything else …

Turnover margin, turnover margin, turnover margin.

Wake Forest lost a fumble against NC State. That’s it. That’s the only giveaway in six games for a team that’s a ridiculous +14 on the season with three takeaways or more in each of the last four games – all wins.

North Carolina hasn’t had a problem with giveaways, but it’s +1 on the season and gave it up three times over the last two games. This Demon Deacon team capitalizes on EVERYTHING.

Why North Carolina Will Win

The Demon Deacon run defense has been fine, not great. It has to be great.

It allowed 200 yards or more in three games in four before getting the inept Syracuse offense. The defensive front is okay at getting behind the line, but it’s about to get hit hard by a Tar Heel offense that’s able to put up 300-yard ground games without any sort of a problem.

How strong is the UNC attack? Its blowing past 500 yards per game over the last five. Wake Forest has the offense to keep up for a bit, but it can’t keep trading blows with this attack.

What’s Going To Happen

Being at home seems to matter to North Carolina. The team is going to get pushed, and it’s going to have to deal with a Wake Forest squad that’s not going away, but the running game will win out.

Expect a fun high-scoring fight, and expect yet another inconsistent overall Tar Heel performance from a team that struggles to put together a full 60 minutes.

Why Virginia Tech Will Win

The running game is special.

Helped by getting Kansas transfer Khalil Herbert, Swiss Army knife Raheem Blackshear from Rutgers, and with QB Hendon Hooker back, the Hokies are ripping through everything in their path.

They’ve hit the 300-yard mark on the ground in three of the four games, and even in the one loss, it came up with 260 yards against North Carolina, made up by enough passing yards to tie for a season-high 495 yards of total offense.

Wake Forest’s run defense gets hammered on whenever anyone tries to pound away, giving up over 200 yards to NC State and Virginia. It’s going to have a problem.

Why Wake Forest Will Win

For all of the great things Virginia Tech has done so far with a short-staffed team, it’s struggling on both sides of the ball on third downs, the defense is struggling against the run, and it now has to deal with a Wake Forest team that doesn’t turn the ball over and scores in bunches.

The Demon Deacons lost to Clemson, and on the road in a tight 45-42 fight with NC State – no shame there.

The passing game has been great throughout the year, the offense has only lost the ball once – a fumble against NC State – and it’s connecting deep, averaging over nine yards per pass. The Hokie secondary is getting hammered for 7.7 yards a throw.

What’s Going To Happen

Wake Forest is more dangerous than it’s being given credit for.

Virginia Tech might be the third-best team if and when it all comes together from a health and consistency standpoint, but it’s about to be in for a battle.

The Demon Deacon passing game will be fantastic, the Hokie running game will be fantastic, and this game will be fantastic with both offenses trading punches all game long.

Why Virginia Will Win

Third downs, third downs, third downs.

Third down offense has been an issue for Virginia, and this is the week to get past it.

The Wake Forest offense is great, and it’s not making a whole lot of mistakes, but it can’t do anything defensively on third downs. It’s one thing to get rolled by Clemson, but NC State and Campbell were able to combine to convert 15-of-29 third down tries.

The Cavalier offensive line is playing well and the team is dominating the tempo. UVA leads the ACC in time of possession and Wake Forest doesn’t seem to care that much about keeping its offense on the field.

The Cavaliers will have the ball for an extra ten minutes – at least – and could dominate if they can convert on third downs.

Why Wake Forest Will Win

Virginia isn’t doing a whole lot of Virginia things.

Bronco Mendenhall teams always dictate the tempo, but this one has too many special teams breakdowns, the passing game isn’t getting anything down the field, and there are too many turnovers.

It doesn’t help the already-struggling passing game that QB Brennan Armstrong is in the concussion protocol and is iffy at best to go.

Wake Forest has had a few weeks off after the Notre Dame game was postponed, and it’s very rested, and apparently very salty. So far the team isn’t getting flagged, it’s not turning the ball over, and there haven’t been any problems scoring.

What’s Going To Happen

Virginia has the talent to be a whole lot better than it has been, but it doesn’t have the passing game to exploit Wake Forest’s issues. The Demon Deacons will struggle to get control of the game because they won’t have the ball enough, but they’re not going to make enough mistakes to lose this at home. It’ll come down to the final seconds, and after a shaky start to the season, PK Nick Sciba will come through.
