Notre Dame volleyball wins first-round match of NCAA Tournament

The Irish are moving on in the NCAA Tournament.

Notre Dame has advanced in the NCAA Tournament after defeating Army in four sets, 23-25, 25-22, 25-17, 25-11, in the first round. This is the 12th time the Irish (15-3) have made it to the Round of 32 in their history, and they did it in their first-ever meeting with the Black Knights. They will continue their tournament stay Thursday against Oregon (14-4), which swept the Irish in the teams’ only previous meeting Oct. 20, 1985.

Among the key contributors for Notre Dame were Charley Niego with 12 kills and 11 digs, Caroline Meuth with 10 kills and five blocks, and Zoe Nunez with 30 assists, 12 digs and three of the team’s season-high 10 service aces. The Irish got a match-high eight blocks apiece from Hannah Thompson and Lauren Wenzel. Hattie Monson contributed 14 digs.

If the Irish defeat the Ducks, it will mean the seventh Sweet 16 trip in program history. They now have won four matches in a row and six of their past seven.

Watch: Notre Dame volleyball players congratulate trainer on 25 years

Student-athletes wouldn’t be who they are without their teams’ athletic trainers.

Student-athletes wouldn’t be who they are without their teams’ athletic trainers. When one person holds a team’s trainer position for a long time, that person obviously is trustworthy. Notre Dame volleyball trainer Chantel Porter has had her job for the past 25 years, and the time seemed right for the program’s current players to honor her for just that. The following video was released just ahead of the Irish’s Senior Night match against Clemson:

Porter came to the Irish at a time when they made the NCAA Tournament every year, a run that lasted between 1992 and 2006. They also routinely won the conference championship. During this period, the Irish were headed by Debbie Brown, who won 519 matches during her tenure, nearly 400 more than Art Lambert, the next coach on the program’s wins list. To say “Chants”, as she is affectionately called in the video, has seen a lot of success is an understatement, and her players hope she will continue to devote her time to the program for many seasons more.

New York planning accelerated decision on fate of winter high school sports

A decision on the fate of winter high school sports in New York could be coming sooner than originally expected.

A decision on the fate of winter high school sports in New York could be coming sooner than originally expected.

According to syracuse.com, the New York Public High School Athletic Association has set Nov. 30 as the date when winter sports such as basketball, hockey and wrestling can begin practice. This decision comes after a timetable for New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s decision whether to allow high-risk high school sports this winter emerged.

Cuomo has said that he will make his decision on winter high school sports “before Dec. 31.” However, that does little for the outlook of winter high school sports in New York, as competition is usually underway well before the end of December. The uncertainty surrounding Cuomo’s timetable for a decision is why the NYSPHSAA elected to push high-risk fall sports cheerleading, football and volleyball to March.

State budget director Robert Mujica said Cuomo will “likely” address winter sports at some point in November on a conference call Wednesday.

“That obviously is beneficial to us because we were under the impression we wouldn’t get any new information until Dec. 31,” NYSPHSAA spokesperson Chris Watson said. “I think the timeline that was announced today is a good timeline for us to get some things figured out. What will happen next is we will wait and see what we can get from state officials. To know that athletics is on their radar is a good sign for us.”

Notre Dame Volleyball Player Hattie Monson is ACC Freshman of the Week

Hattie Monson has wasted little time making an impact on Notre Dame’s volleyball team.

Hattie Monson has wasted little time making an impact on Notre Dame’s volleyball team. The ACC took notice of this and named Monson, a freshman libero, its Freshman of the Week. She made her Notre Dame debut during the Irish’s first match of the season Sept. 25 at Louisville and led the team with 20 digs. Her three aces were a high for the match.

Monson is one of four freshmen on the Irish this season. One year before coming to Notre Dame out of Benet Academy in Lisle, Illinois, she was a PrepVolleyball.com First Team All-American and an Under Armour Second Team All-American. More recently, she was named to the U.S. Women’s Junior National Training Team. In 2018, she won a gold medal with the U.S. Girls Youth National Team during the NORCECA U18 Continental Championship.

Notre Dame (1-0, 1-0) will play only three other opponents during the regular season: Syracuse, Pittsburgh and Boston College. The season wraps up Oct. 24.
